My eyes peeled open to see a grey ceiling, the antiseptic smell with an undertone of the artificial fragrance contained in soaps and cleaners. I knew immediately where I was. This was a place I was very familiar with as a kid. Sitting up in the bed to see the dull room with chairs around me, I could hear the birds outside through the open window. They sang their song as they flew around in the wind.
The door opened to the shocked faces of my family. Hina was the first one to come rushing towards me, embracing me tightly "we just became sisters again and" she cried into my shoulder squeezing me "I was so scared that I had lost you." I patted her back as she held me too tight and thankfully my dad came to the rescue as he pulled her away gently. She quickly apologises as dad smiles before patting my head, "hey kid, how are you feeling?"
Giving him a thumbs up as I smiled back at him, but as I looked over at mum, she didn't even dare look at me. Instead, she turned her back on me, walking towards the door, "I'll go get you some food." I could tell she felt terrible, but she couldn't run forever. Mum needs to face me so we can get past this. Lifting my hand up to the place she had hit me as the memories of that day haunts me, even though it still hurts to think about it. I want to move on, I can't stay in the past any more than I am because soon I will be in the past.
Dad sat down beside me as he wrapped his arm around me, "I'm sorry about your mum, you know how scared she is about you." Turning to look at him but before I could speak, Hina yelled, "we all are, dad! (Y/N) could die at any moment. Today could have been that day but doesn't mean we should cage her in from having freedom." After her speech, she stormed out of the room, leaving the two of us alone.
"I have a lot of regrets in my life, (Y/N). All I want is for you to be safe and alive, but I also don't want you to ruin your life for us." I hugged dad tightly as I felt something wet fall on my head. I didn't look up but instead changed the topic, "I made a friend" he pulled away and held onto my shoulder a bright smile now graced his face. He stood up as he began bouncing about in happiness, I giggled at his behaviour "I bet it's that boy I saw" nodding my head with a smile.
"I was so afraid that you would live your life as a ghost, wandering around. Waiting for your time to come, but now" he bounced back over to me giving me another embrace "you have a friend."
The door opened and in came Hina, she smiled at us "not just one but a whole team full of friends. They have her back, she's gonna be fine, dad." Dad's eyes widened more as I panicked as he started to cry again, but this time it was tears of joy. "Invite them over one day, and I mean all of them. I wanna shake every one their hands" some dad's would be overprotective of their daughter having guy friends, but my dad is just happy that I have friends no matter the gender. "Well you don't have to wait much longer," Hina said as she opened the door to reveal Kuroo in his school uniform holding flowers. "Hey, manager" he gave me a smile as dad looked over in shock, "friend?" I nodded my head as he rushed over to him.
Dad shook his hand as I laughed at his reaction, "take care of her while I'm not there" dad said as Kuroo smiled at dad, "I will, sir." Hina gestured for dad as they left the room, leaving us two alone. "Hey, captain" Kuroo walked closer to me as I noticed the flowers in his hand were my favourite. How did he know that? "The others wanted to come, but I knew how loud they would get. I didn't want to disturb the others" nodding my head in understanding, them boys sure can make some noise.
Kuroo took a seat in one of the chairs by the bed, "so how was practice without me?" I wiggled my eyebrow, "you're gonna have to get used to it." He put his hand on him squeezing it tight, "don't say it like that" nodding my head, forgetting that he knew the actual reason. Kuroo began to describe the day, "they all really missed you" my eyes softened as I could already imagine how they were going to react once I got back.
"Oh also everyone wants to go to a theme park to make it up to Lev for leaving him behind." He then began showing me pictures of the place, and it looked really fun. However, I didn't think mum would allow it, "I don't think I'll be able to go, my mum's been really overprotective recently." Just at that exact moment, mum walked in with a bag of McDonald's in her hand. Kuroo stood up before staring at my mum in the eye, he bowed "please allow (Y/N) come to the theme park with the team." It was silent for a bit as Kuroo was still bowing, "I promise, I'll look after her. I won't let anything happen to her" mum looked at him in shock before tapping him on the shoulder gesturing for him to stand back up. "I'll trust you to look after my daughter" mum walked over to me.
"She's my little girl," she said lovely as she kissed my forehead before whispering into my ear. "I'm so sorry about yesterday, I won't stop you from now on. Live your life" Mum gave me a sad smile as I watched her walk towards the door. "Wait" I called out to her, causing her to look over at me, "aren't you going to be worried about me?" I questioned as she placed the food on the table, "of course I'll always be worried, but you need to be selfish sometimes, otherwise how else are you supposed to live your life." With that, she left the room.
"You should listen to your mum," Kuroo said as he walked over to the table and reached his head into the McDonald's bag stealing my chips and popping it in his mouth "be selfish like me" he winked at me as he ate more. I threw a pillow at him before yelling "I'm the patient here, those are mine."
He smirked at me, "yes, just like that. Be selfish" he said as he watched me eating all my food.
