The waiting lasted longer than any of them would have liked. Not a single opportunity arose for them to dash to the gates. The guards on the wall never took their eyes off the road, even when a couple of them switched shifts with new people. At least one of them always kept a weapon raised. They wouldn't even be able to take them all out without alerting the whole town. Lucy began to think it would be easier to tunnel under the wall.
Michonne seemed to get bored of waiting and crept away, staying crouched. Rick tried calling after her but she didn't turn back.
'All right, we need to downsize,' he told the rest of them, putting some of the weapons and gear he was carrying down. Oscar and Daryl did the same, while Lucy only had her bow and arrows. She did, however, take her backpack off and hide it under the car they were still behind.
'Aint no way we're gonna check in all them buildings, not with all them guards there,' Daryl pointed out. From where they were hid they could just about see a street of buildings and there were undoubtedly many more. Before anyone could make a suggestion, Michonne returned. Everyone raised their weapons when they heard her come up behind them and quickly lowered them when they saw it was her. She gestured for them to follow her.
They moved in silence again, following Michonne around the edge of the walls and to the back of a building. She led them through a door and inside what seemed to be a stockroom of sorts. Lucy almost instinctively began looking at what was on the shelves for useful things. After almost a year of scavenging it was second nature.
'This is where you were held?' Rick asked Michonne.
'I was questioned,' she replied. Lucy hadn't even known about Michonne being held or questioned, just that she'd been chased and shot by Daryl's brother. Now didn't seem like the time to ask for that story though.
'Where else could they be?' She asked, conscious that they didn't have much time. Glenn and Maggie were still in danger and it wouldn't be long until the group were found. Michonne seemed to shrug off the question, unsure of an answer. The streets outside the building had been quiet, but several voices and could suddenly be heard. Daryl moved to the window and peered through a curtain, shortly followed by Rick.
'I thought you said there was a curfew,' Rick said, turning back to face the room. Several people were walking down the street, and whilst none of them seemed to be interested in any buildings they were potentially in danger.
'This street is packed during the day, those are stragglers.'
'Anyone comes in here we're sitting ducks, we gotta move,' Rick told them, checking out the window again.
'They could be in his apartment,' Michonne suggested. Until now, Lucy hadn't heard about a 'him.' The only person she could think of was the man who took Maggie and Glenn, but given that Daryl wasn't reacting in any way she assumed it wasn't him, and wasn't even sure if he knew his brother was there. Surely he would want to find him, especially after he had apparently been left behind.
'Whose apartment?' She asked, wanting to know who they were up against. Everyone seemed to squint at her slightly, not realising that she didn't have half the information they did.
'The man who runs the place, he's called the Governor.' Lucy's heart missed a beat. She knew him, or had known him, a long time ago. She had tried to kill him. He had done the same to her. She must have visibly reeled back as they were all looking at her as if waiting for her tragic backstory.
'You alright?' Daryl whispered to her. She nodded, trying to act fine and pretending her whole body wasn't brimming with white-hot anger. She had to focus on the task at hand and forget what had happened months ago - at least until Maggie and Glenn were safe.
Before anyone could question her reaction, somebody began knocking loudly on the door. They shook the handle and rapped on the window, causing the group inside to scatter into the furthest room and hide. As soon as they were hidden in the darkness a key turned in the lock and a man entered.
