Jiro heard the door slide closed from underneath her dad. Darn, Kaminari had left before she could get an explanation. "Sweetie, how are you feeling?" Her dad asked for maybe the fifth time. "Dad, I'm fine, I promise. Just a little tired." He finally pulled away enough for Jiro to see her mom and Toru on the other side of the room. "We were just so worried honey. You have been unconscious for days..." Her mom trailed off, her pretty violet eyes tearing up. "I'm sorry for worrying you mama, but everything turned out fine, right?" The two exchange a glance. "Sweetie... There was a fight last night between All-Might and some villains. It was brutal and destroyed most of Kamino ward." Jiro blinked.
Her mom took a seat on her bed and held her hand. "All-Might retired last night." Jiro could only stare dumbfounded at her mom. After a little bit she looked at her dad and saw silent tears running down his cheeks.
So this is what Kaminari had been talking about.
Memories from the past semester flew by before her eyes.
The first day of class, seeing All-Might in person, when they had gone to do battle training. Midoriya suplexing Bakugo had been the highlight of her day. Even if they had just met. All-Might hadn't stopped the fight between the two, as if showing just how far he expected them to go.
The attack on the USJ had been terrifying. Kaminari, Momo and her had been stranded with a bunch of villains, but the pros had come through in the end. Jiro still remembered the intense fight with the Nomu. How it had incapacitated Mr. Aizawa, leaving him a bloody mess on the ground. And then All-Might fighting with everything he had to protect them, eventually blasting the Nomu out of the dome with the sheer force of his punches.
The Hosu incident that had marked the end of their internships had also been a shock to everyone. Nomu had appeared on the streets and that same night the Hero Killer: Stain had been arrested. All-Might hadn't been present at the scene, but knowing that he was around and that he was their teacher had been a great reassurance. He wouldn't ever let anything happen to them. He would keep them safe. Jiro, and she knew the rest of her classmates, believes in him even if the public was starting to become panicked.
Then there had been their final exam for the semester. Jiro and Kota had had it difficult against Present Mic but, once again, seeing the way All-Might pushed Midoriya and Bakugo to their limit and beyond had been incredible. His presence alone was enough to stop their bickering and bring them together in order to pass.
Finally was the battle at I-Island earlier that same summer. Upon arriving at the roof of the tower they had seen the absolute chaos, Midoriya and All-Might at the center of it. The ground had been shifting and collapsing under them as the others battled but all Jiro could do was keep Kaminari safe by her side while he was still in his dummy mode. Metal flying and colliding loudly above, explosions breaking up anything that got too close to them, ice crackling then splintering. When All-Might had been trapped in a cube of metal and then that had been skewered a cry had ripped itself from her throat before she could even think about it. Midoriya had broken him free but the brief moment where they thought that they had lost All-Might had been almost incomprehensible.
All-Might couldn't be retiring. Not now. They needed him now more than ever.
"-today." Jiro focused her eyes on her mom's smiling face. The door opened again and Toru's parents entered the room. "Hagakure!" Toru was then buried under her own worried parents. "Would you want to get some ice cream on the way home?" Jiro's mom was speaking to her again. "Um, yeah, that'd be nice." Jiro said before pausing. "Do you know when I'll get discharged. Her mom blinked at her before saying, "Today sweetie."
Oh.
"Mrs. Toru? Mr. Toru?" Jiro's dad called to the other set of worried parents. "Would you like to accompany us to get some ice cream once the girls are discharged." Toru's dad looked up and smiled, "that sounds like a good a idea." After a bit more chatter and catching up, both set of parents finally left, promising to be back as soon as the girls were cleared to go home. Truthfully, Jiro had only been present physically. Her mind was a swirling mess of thoughts and emotions that were starting to make her dizzy.
"Hey Jiro...?" Jiro looked away from her phone which she had been staring at.
"Yeah?"
The girls sat there looking at each other.
"Kaminari said we should get together soon to talk about things." Hagakure finally said.
"Oh. Okay. Sounds good." Jiro mumbled numbly.
Nothing more was said after that. Both girl were too stunned.
All-Might was gone. The symbol of peace may have won but it had still disappeared.
Jiro could almost see it. Society, previously illuminated and protected from the sea of darkness by All-Might's light, was now plunged into the shadows. Obviously, there were more heroes, good heroes, but they were no wear near as strong as All-Might had been. That light had gone out. All that were left were embers, and even then those were weak. Realistically speaking, it was only a matter on time before those went out as well.
Would she be able to keep hers alive? What about her classmates? Her friends? Kaminari?
Kaminari...
Kaminari with that silly, overly friendly grin. Those vibrant golden eyes. Ugh, and that stupid lightning bolt on his fringe of his soft looking hair. She wondered if it would feel as soft as it looked. It didn't seem like he used any type of gel. It would probably smell like whatever shampoo he used. Though she had caught a whiff of something surprisingly sweet earlier when he had draped himself over her legs. Gosh, that goof, doesn't he know that he shouldn't be doing that ... Why was she wondering what Kaminari smelled like?
Jiro blinked. This time she had been staring that the door.
