So I just found out that before the 1992 Newsies movie was Newsies, it was originally not a musical, and it was called Hard Promises. Keep in mind that this version is much more darker than the Newsies movie, it has a lot more swearing, and it's not a musical. Also, Sarah has more character development than she has in the movie.
Here's the tumblr post where I found the information:
I love the 1992 movie and the songs so much, but part of me wishes we got this instead.
Like some of the script of this version made it into the final film. For instance, in the film when Jack is talking about how he escaped the Refuge on Teddy Roosevelt's carriage, it was actually referring to when Jack witnessed his little brother dying by getting crushed by the carriage, which is actually scripted to be seen in the Hard Promises script. Also, the dialogue from the scene where Davey confronts Jack about being a scab in the movie is almost exactly the same in the Hard Promises script.
Would you guys have rather had the 92sies movie as a musical like it is now or as it was originally in Hard Promises?
