Chapter 26

-tragedy-

After his early morning conversation with Omera, Din was trying desperately to relax. Winta was playing with the other children, Omera was ten feet to his right pulling krill like the rest of them. The sky was a brilliant blue and the weather was perfect. Everything was fine.

Caben on his left and Stoke on his right were arguing again. He never really understood why. Omera said they had been friends so long they were practically brothers and so argued like it. Whatever their reason, it was irritating. Rolling his eyes for about the twentieth time in the last ten minutes, Din huffed an exasperated sigh and stood to stretch his back. When he looked up, Tanda was waving at him from the side of the pond.

"Good morning, Tanda. Can I help you?"

She smiled brightly at him and nodded. "Yes, you can. You see, I was having a nice afternoon nap like I do every day, when my dream was interrupted by this, angry beeping. I got up and looked all around my house but..." She held up her empty hands and shrugged. Din squinted and pressed his thumb into his temple as she went on. "Anyway, I went outside and it got louder so I thought, why don't I just follow it and see what I find? Well, it led me to your house. That's where it was coming from! See? The repetitive beeping was so loud I could hear it from my house. Although, you know that really isn't unusual. We do live so close."

Frowning, he chose to ignore her implications and looked instead in the direction of their home. The only thing that would make that noise was the comm, and the only people that had their comm address were Cara, Bo-Katan and Boba Fett. Nodding his thanks to Tanda, he pulled himself from the pond and headed to check the message. Wringing out the bottom of his shirt, damp over his waders, he scanned the patch of tall grass and flowers where the children were playing today.

Everything was fine. He could go check on her after he heard the message. Reminding himself of those two things over and over, Din walked through to his and Omeras bedroom to silence the comm. Flipping the switch, a panicked looking Cara appeared.

"Din! Fuck I hope you get this message in time. Migs just walked into my office. Said he ran into someone called Xi'an 24 hours ago." The dread that had been nagging all week surged. "She escaped the prison planet she was being held on and is hunting you down. Migs says she wants revenge for her brother and that she has a tracking fob and a new crew." Fuck, no. No, no, no. He couldn't breathe. "Get your fucking beskar on and get your family on the ship. We're on the way. If you leave before we get there send me a transmission." She rattled off a comm number but Din couldn't hear over the blood rushing in his ears.

He was racing out of the house, shouting for Omera, for Winta before he could think of anything else.

"Omera! WINTA!"

Omera was hauling herself from the pond, panic on her face as she ran to meet him. "Din, what's wrong?"

Seeing that she was ok and surrounded by a growing crowd of people. Din continued towards the children but shouted a short explanation over his shoulder at her.

"It was Cara, on the comm. Winta, fuck... answer me!"

By now all of the children were standing, huddled together in the patch of flowers and grass. Quickly, he scanned all of their faces, his own crumbling in desperate, white hot panic when he didn't see her. Fuck, fucking precious, solitary child why did she always do this to him.
