ONLY ONES WHO KNOW
The lights had risen, as the film had just finished, and we stared at the screen in silence as the credits rolled.
“Well that was a fucking good film”, Alex exclaimed, in a quite blunt fashion.
“Very true, very true”, I answered.
“I feel sort of inspired”, Alex said, “Write a few new songs. Like make it a little bit more singer – songwritery. More vintage or something. I don't know.”
“No, Alex! That sounds amazing. I would totally listen to something like that”
We got up and started to walk down the aisle, chatting as we went.
“We need to have a party”, Alex remarked.
“Why, exactly?”, I chuckled to myself.
“Like make it all 1920's/30's like the film. I will just be the next Gatsby”, he smirked.
Right as I was about to step off the slight stair to the main staircase of the movie theatre, I turned my head over my shoulder to look at Alex and laugh at his remark, when my foot slipped and I suddenly came tumbling toward the ground. I do this thing when I get hurt, where I just close my eyes and hope for the best, which is probably a bad thing...but I do it!
It all happened in a flash, as those things usually do. I clenched my body in fear, waiting for it to hit the ground, but all I could feel was a pair of arms tightly wrapped around my waste. I peaked open my eyes to see Alex's dark brown, beautifully intense eyes inches from mine. He was slightly bent over, one of his legs one on the aisle and the other on the first step of the staircase. I was somewhere in between, inches from the ground.
He spun me up words to him, making me feel weightless. When I got to his level, his arms were still wrapped around my lower back, and I had my hands on his chest, in order to catch my footing. We gazed into each other's dark brown eyes for a long while. When we realized this, we quickly took our hands off of each other and adjusted our positions.
“That fall was...smooth...”, I coughed with a smiled.
“Too... smooth for me”, Alex looked down and chuckled.
There was a quiet moment between us. I could almost tell what he was thinking, as he could with me. We just stood there. Staring. This was the first time that we remained eye contact for this long. I mean sure we have...but not like this. There was a certain look in his eyes. Melancholy, almost. His eyes sparkled, as if he was telling me something. I couldn't quite tell what he meant.
I can't describe to you how quiet this moment was. It was as if the world had been destroyed and we were the only ones left. It was calm, and dark. The whole world went black. It was just me and him. Alex let out a small melancholy breath, and said.
“They've made it too far easy to believe that true romance can't be achieved these days. We're the only ones who know...”
