LEAVE BEFORE THE LIGHTS COME ON
Alex pulled away from next to my face and stood still so close to me. I breathed out a shaky breath and looked into his dark brown eyes. They had so much soul. He looked down at me, with his melancholy eyes. Our torsos were still touching, and another strand of his hair fell on to my forhead, making me shudder. He ran his hands up and down my arm. I shivered.
We gazed into each other's eyes. I felt as if something was about to happen, as he began to get even closer to me. Right when this happened, however, we heard a voice from the kitchen calling,
“Who want's dessert?”
We quickly pulled away from each other. This time there was no blushing or giggling. This time, we just stood there side by side, silent and breathless. Arielle walked into the room, smiling, and saw us awkwardly standing there next to each other, almost as if we were hiding something. Her expression changed from a smile to more of a confused, slight frown.
“....Do...you guys want dessert..?”, she asked.
“Umm...sure!”, I said way too quickly
“Alex!”, Arielle exclaimed, “I heard a little bit of you playing. I couldn't really hear you singing, but I heard some of the piano part and it sounded lovely. What was it?”
“Oh nothing, really”, he said to me, smirking subtly, then looked back to Arielle.
How was he so cool when he did that?! He could just act like nothing happened, but still give subtle hints to the people who knew. I could never do something like that. I would just give it away. I'm just so awkward with people I don't know very well.
“Ahh, well I'd love to hear it sometime”, Arielle added.
Alex shrugged and walked off to the kitchen, leaving me along with Arielle. She walked up to me, intensely, grabbed my shoulder, frustrated, and said in a slight whisper,
“Listen, I get that you and Alex are friends or whatever, but he is my boyfriend.”
Her expression changed from angry, to smiling a big smile, as if nothing happened. Her voice adjusted from whisper to a regular speaking tone, and said smiling and giggling,
“Just wanted you to know that!”
She started walking off into the kitchen, leaving me shocked. Just staring at the wall. She turned back to me and said,
“Maybe you should leave. It's getting late.”
I turned around to her and nodded my head, a deer in headlights. I started showing myself to the door, lost in thought. What if she was right? Maybe I shouldn't be hanging out with Alex so much. I twisted the door nob and walked down the stairs into the cool night.
I was half way down the drive way, when I heard the door open. It was Alex. I jumped behind a wall, hiding myself. I gently peaked over the edge, as I wanted to see what was happening. Alex was looking around, confused and semi upset. Arielle was standing behind him. I heard Alex say,
“Where did she go?”, he turned around to Arielle and asked.
Arielle's eyes darted around the lawn thinking of something to say. “She...had...she didn't say. She just...left.”
“But she doesn't have a car. I picked her up.”, Alex argued.
“She....she'll be...fine”, Arielle said, trying to get Alex inside.
“It was the song....wasn't it”, Alex muttered, under his breath.
“What?”, Arielle asked.
“Nothing...”, he said, looking upset.
Arielle grabbed his hand and took him inside. A tear began to roll down my cheek. I sat there behind the wall, looking off into the distance, upset, when I processed what Alex had said.
“Oh, shite! I don't have a car!!”, I almost exclaimed out loud.
I snuck out of their lawn, without getting seen. I wondered around the streets of LA for a while, lost in thought, zoning out. I was looking for some place to go. I finally saw a cab and caught it. I thought about what Arielle said all the way until I arrived home.
