The heat was just unbearable. The horizon was blurred it was so incredibly scorching. We were in Arizona. The Monkey's went on a West Coast tour. I stayed home in Los Angeles for about a month until their final concert. I wanted to be there. Al and the gang started off in LA, did a few gigs up and down Cali, Oregon, and Washington, and then they stopped back in LA to pick me up. We drove all the way out to Phoenix together. A lot of mischief went on.
Anyways, tonight was the night of their show. The gig was in the middle of the desert in a giant, sandy field. Jamie, Nick, Matt, and Al walked a little infront of me. I was giving them space before the show. (Al still gets nervous before he plays). The golden sun was setting perfectly, as I saw the backside of the huge stage.
Alex turned around to make sure I was still there. He stopped walking and reached out his hand. I jogged forward a bit to grab it. We sauntered hand in hand, chasing the golden sunset. We stepped up a set of metal stairs onto the back stage.
"Al, here ya go," one of the guitar techs handed him a guitar amplifier to put in his back pocket.
He let go of my hand and situated the tiny black box with wires coming out of it in the back pocket of his dark blue jeans. Jamie walked by and gave me an awkward high five. "Heh," he chuckled. Matt scoffed at Jamie's lack of communication skills. "What a cinnamon roll," he declared. Nick rolled his eyes at Matt's judgmental nature, and Al face-palmed at this grand chain reaction. I stood there just thinking, "I don't understand their relationship."
It was time for the show to begin. The 3 boys walked onto stage, and Al quickly kissed me, half on stage, before fully engulfing himself in the screams. He waved and smiled to the crowd. I stayed behind watching him proudly from the wings.
He grabbed his black Gibson Les Paul from the back of the stage, winked at Matt, his brother in arms, and started to play R U Mine. I was slightly confused because they usually start with Do I Wanna Know and end with R U Mine. This was going to be an interesting show.
The sun had said its goodbyes and the moon had come out to say hello. The show was nearly over and now I was spacing off, looking at the tens of thousands of people from backstage. I was completely lost in thought when suddenly, I heard my name being called. I jolted up from my chair as I saw Alex with the mic in his right hand, pointing at me with his other.
"Beatrice... She is my beautiful best friend and is sitting over there," he laughed.
I smiled and my face went red. Thank god no one could see me. He clipped the mic back on the stand and his now messy 'almost done with the show' hair started flopping around as he jogged towards me. He started pulling my arms out onto stage, as I resisted.
"Come on, love," he pleaded, cheekily.
I am sure the audience was confused, as all they could see was Al pulling on something.
"They will love you. Don't be scared," he said, "You don't have to worry about anything. It's only James Cook that has to."
I laughed as Jamie stood with a confused look on his face before realizing what Al said. "Fuckin hell..!" were the classic words Jamie spoke.
I gave in and let Al lead me onto stage. The crowd cheered as Alex leaned on the mic and coughed, "This is the first time she's let me drag her on here." The crowd went wild. "Better be hospitable now, you hear...?" he added, "No throwing things."
"Alex...what do you want me to do up here.." I asked.
"Sing with me!" he said excitedly.
"Nononononoonnono," I started to pull away, "I have never sang in front of this big of a crowd."
Alex started, "You are an incredibly talented musician. You are starting to become well known. These are the kinds of crowds you will be performing in front of from now on."
"Fine..." I meekly answered. How could I say no to such a reasonable answer and pretty lil face.
The crowd cheered as Al handed me a microphone. He turned around to Matt, Jamie, and Nick and mouthed some words and they nodded. He whispered to me, "We are singing Baby I am Yours. Remember when I sang that to you?" he smiled.
That was so long ago. Ages ago! Look at us now. Openly in a relationship and standing in front of 40,000 people. The adventures life takes us on, huh...? He started to sing the song written by the wonderful Barbara Lewis.
"Baby I'm yours. And I'll be yours until the stars fall from the sky. Yours until the rivers all run dry. In other words, until I die." His voice smoothly sailed across the lyrics.
I opened my mouth to sing but nothing came out. Al rushed towards me and grabbed my hands as he helped me, "Baby I'm yours...."
I started, "And I'll be yours until the sun no longer shines. Yours until the poets run out of rhyme. In other words, until the end of time."
We swayed together and the crowd was silent. I could feel the audience's eyes on us, as well as the 3 other men on stage.
"Baby I'm yours," Alex sang, "And I'll be yours until two and two is three..."
This lyric made him grin from ear to ear. I almost had tears in my eyes as the song finished. The 40,000 audience members clapped as well as the rest of the gang. Alex didn't smile at me when he looked my way, but I could tell in the eyes. It was the same thing I mentioned last time. That proud look almost. I rushed to him and embraced him.
The audience 'awwed' and when I pulled away Al kissed me sweetly, and the audience was quiet. He leaned towards the mic and said, "I could spend all the time in the world with this one," he then looked at me.
I felt my heart exploding in my chest. The sort of crazy steam bubbling phenomenon when you leave a pot of water on the stove for too long. I was in complete awe. I could never be more happy and this is all I wanted to do. Be a musician. Now, I am doing it. I am doing it with the one I love.
All 5 of us walked off stage. Matt was sweaty in his joggers, Jamie looked utterly fascinated with something, Nick looked just like... well... Nick, and Alex had this look in his eye. This dumbfounded look in his eye. He playfully bumped my shoulder, and I did back.
He stopped for a second, turned to me and said,
"Let's go to Paris."
