Twenty-Five

The next day, I had managed to shower on my own and make it to the couch. I could tell how boring this was going to be and I was dreading the day to come. I shouldn't have been so stupid to jump in between two guys fighting. I guess I should be lucky. It could have been worse.

*knock knock*

Before I could say come in, the door opened.

"Good morning, sunshine." I turned to see John.

"Well, aren't you in a good mood this morning."

"I sure am. I have the day off which means you get all this to yourself." John playfully motioned his arms down his body, making me laugh. "Now there's that smile I wanted to see." John held up a tray of drinks and a box. "I brought breakfast." I was so hungry, but I was way too tired to attempt to make myself something. I was so glad he brought food. "I assumed you would be too tired to cook." Boy, he was right about that.

"Can you help me to the table?" John nodded and walked towards me. He grabbed my hand, placing his other hand under my opposite arm to keep me sturdy.

"Can we go a little slower?"

"Yeah. I'm sorry, Jen."

"It's alright. I'm just tired." Slowly, we made our way to the table. John pulled out my chair and pushed it closer to the table when I took a seat. He took a seat in the chair across from me.

"I brought you a coffee." He placed it in front of me. "I also got donuts. There is a half dozen here. I figure women are hard to decide on what they want anyway, so this way there's two of each flavor, so we can have one of each." John and I both grabbed a donut and took a bite. "I hope this doesn't offend you." I used the napkin to wipe my mouth.

"How would this offend me?"

"I bought donuts for a cop for breakfast..."

"Wow." I rolled my eyes at him, continuing to enjoy the raspberry-filled donut, which was my favorite. We continued eating and drinking coffee until our caramel donut had been eaten. "I'm full."

"Me, too."

"Let's save the cream filling one for later." John rose from the table and closed the box of donuts, walking over to the counter in the kitchen to place them.

"Now, what would you like to do?" I shrugged my shoulders. "Well, you're in luck because I brought movies." I rolled my eyes. "No eye rolls needed. I brought the best movies." The way John was getting my mind off everything was really helpful. I got up from the table and John helped me over to the couch. Just then, my phone rang.

"Can you hand it to me?" John picked it up from the coffee table and gave it to me. "Hello?"

"Hey, Jen. Are you up?"

"Yeah, I'm up Paul."

"Just checking on you."

"Well, you should be working, shouldn't you?"

"Yeah, but one phone call won't hurt. I don't want you by yourself the whole time so I'll stop by during lunch."

"Don't worry about it, Paul." I wasn't in the mood to argue.

"I told you I'm not leaving you alone all day."

"John's here."

"Oh. How is that going? Any kissing yet?"

"Paul, I swear..." I could hear him laughing on the other end of the phone. I swear, he got on my last nerve sometimes.

"I'm just kidding."

"Well, I'm about to watch a movie so I have to go."

"Oh, okay. I'll leave you to it." Paul spoke with a giddy tone. I hung up the phone and handed it to John. He placed it back on the coffee table.

"Paul?"

"Yeah, he was just checking in on me."

"That's sweet."

"He's not going to leave me alone during this."

"Well, it's good he's looking out for you." I shook my head yes. I was getting tired. "If you're tired, I can go."

"No."

"It won't hurt my feelings."

"I don't want you to go." I scooted closer to him and laid my head on his shoulder. John put his arm around me and caressed my hair. The next thing I knew, my eyes were closed and I was falling asleep.
