Neither of us spoke for a few minutes.

"Are you hungry? There's this place called El Patron East Avenue. It's pretty good."

"Let's go then." We remained silent until John parked the truck outside the restaurant. "Should I not have done that?"

"What?"

"Was the kiss too much? Should I have waited?"

"Oh, Jen, no. The kiss was fine."

"Fine?"

"I didn't mean it like that." I crossed my arms. "I enjoyed the kiss. It just caught me off guard. I figured I'd be the one to make that move first."

"I did, too." I paused for a minute. "Is it okay that I kissed you?" John chuckled.

"Of course it's okay, Jen. Come on. Let's go in." We got out of the truck and I followed John to the door. He stopped at the entrance and turned to face me. He grabbed my hand and placed his other hand on my cheek, leaning in. I knew what was about to happen. He kissed me for what seemed like an eternity. Each second that passed made my heart skip a beat. I could feel John smile through the kiss and it was the sweetest thing. He gently pulled back, the smile still on his face. He opened the door, motioning for me to go in first. Our lunch was good. We talked about his parents and going back to San Francisco that night.

"I have work tomorrow."

"I start desk duty tomorrow. I get three works of torture." I rolled my eyes.

"I'm sure you'll miss me." I wanted to tell him yes, I would miss him. Spending this weekend with him had been great and a much-needed getaway. I hated knowing that he would have to go back to work tomorrow because that meant he wouldn't be able to come over. His two days off were Thursday and Friday, and mine was Monday and Wednesday, so they did not line up at all. I was sad. I was sad that we would have to go back and give up this time together.

"I will. I've enjoyed our weekend together."

"So have I. We will have to do this again sometime." I nodded and smiled. We went back to the hotel and packed up our things to go back to San Francisco. "Do you want anything for the road?"

"A milkshake honestly sounds good right now."

"You know me so well." We both laughed and loaded our bags in the truck. John stopped for us some milkshakes and drove us home. I looked out the window at my house. I did not want to get out of the truck, but I did anyway. I grabbed my bag and walked to the door, John following me.

"Thanks for this weekend, John. Maybe we can go back and see your parents again soon?" John smiled. I knew it meant a lot to him to hear me say that. He leaned in and kissed me on the cheek.

"I've got to go by Adam's and give his truck back so I can get my car before I go home. Maybe we can get together and you can properly meet him?" I nodded.

"Sounds good."

"I'll call you." I nodded and went inside. I changed into my pajamas and put away all my things. My phone started to ring and I scrambled to find it. Finally, I glanced at my dresser and found it.

"Hello?"

"Jen, how are you?"

"I'm good, Paul. I'm surprised you didn't call sooner."

"Very funny. How'd your weekend go? Did you talk to John?"

"I did."

"And?"

"He planned a weekend trip for us."

"Really? Where to?"

"Chico. He borrowed his friend's truck and then his friend took his car. We rode horses there and tried this restaurant called El Patron East Avenue. We stayed in a hotel for a night and I met his parents."

"You met his parents? Jen, you should have started with that! How'd that go?"

"I'm not going to lie. I was extremely nervous to meet his parents, but John calmed me down and it helped me a lot. His mom, Reta, is so sweet. His dad didn't say much but I think that's just who he is. Overall, I think it went well."

"I'm so proud of you, Jen. I know that's a big step for you."

"Yeah, especially because he didn't tell me when he came to pick me up that we were going to be in the place where his parents lived. It was his parents' horses we rode and when we were riding, he told me they were his parents."

"Oh...how'd that go over?"

"Well, of course, I was upset that he kept something like that from me, but I told him and we worked it out. He was afraid I would say no and when I told him I wanted to go home...I could tell this meant a lot to him. His mom told me he hadn't brought a girl home before."

"So it was probably a big deal for him, too. He was probably just as nervous as you.

"Yeah, it makes me feel bad now that I think about how I acted."

"It's alright, Jen." We paused for a minute. "You ready for work tomorrow?"

"Really? You know how miserable I'm going to be on desk duty."

"Well, if anything interesting happens, I'll be sure to let you know."

"Alright, Paul. Well, I'm tired. I'm going to head to bed."

"Okay. See you tomorrow."
