Nothing interesting happened at work that day. I worked at the desk all day and had no action which made for a day filled with paperwork. The next day, I hopped in the shower and put on my uniform. I went on with my daily routine of getting coffee at my favorite coffee shop and headed to work. I had thankfully not run into the man from the day before and I was very pleased by that because if I had to go to his place after work for dinner, then that was going to be way more than enough time spent with him.
Sitting at my desk, I kept thinking about the man and how much he was acting like a stalker. Why did I say yes to dinner with him? Was I crazy or something? No one in their right mind would have said yes to having dinner with a man that they barely know at his house, especially if he was going to be cooking. What if he poisoned the food? What would I do then?
"Jen?" I kept on exploring the thoughts in my head. He had to repeat himself several times before I looked up.
"Oh, Paul. Hey."
"Jen, what is going on with you?"
"Nothing. I'm fine."
"No Jen, you are not fine. You have barely gotten any work done since you have been here and it is almost lunch. What is bothering you?"
"Paul..."
"I know, you don't like talking about your personal life but it's me, Jen. What about if we grab lunch and you tell me then?" I nodded. When we got to the little restaurant, I still did not want to talk about what was bothering me with Paul. The waiter brought our food over to us.
"Thanks."
"Jen, talk to me."
"I hate talking about this kind of stuff. You know that."
"Isn't tonight your date with that one guy?"
"Yes."
"Are you excited about it?"
"Honestly, no. That's what is bothering me."
"Why?"
"Do you think I'm crazy for saying yes to having dinner with him? I mean, I barely even know the guy and he is cooking tonight at his house. The guy doesn't even have a car so I have to drive myself over there."
"And what? You think he's going to poison you or something?" I looked up at him.
"Maybe."
"You're crazy. Nothing like that is going to happen. If you don't believe me, then go to the bathroom and shoot me a text if you need an excuse to leave and I'll call saying you're needed at work."
"You know if you weren't married with a daughter, then I might've just assumed you were female." I chuckled.
"Why do you say that?"
"Normally if a girl goes on a date and needs an excuse to leave, she gets her girl friend to help her out, not her male work partner."
"Well, no offense but I'm like your only friend. But you know I've always got your back."
"Well, thanks Paul. You ready to go?" He nodded and we headed back to work.
