For the next two weeks, John was so helpful. He came by every chance he got and brought me food, watched a movie with me, etc. Paul came by twice and informed me that he was taking the trip with Julie and Christina. He said if I wanted him to stay that he wouldn't go, but I told him he should go and have fun with his family. I would be fine. Besides, John was there watching after me.
I walked into the hospital after two weeks, praying for the good news that I could return to work. John was sitting beside me. He insisted that he drive me there. The doctor had come in and asked me some questions, while the nurses ran a couple of tests on me.
"I hope it's good news."
"Me, too." He placed his hand on top of mine. A few minutes passed and when I thought I couldn't possibly take much more waiting, the doctor came in.
"Doctor? Is it good news? Can I go back to work?"
"Well...Yes, Jen. You may return to work." I couldn't control my excitement. "But...you need to remember that you may feel tired as the day progresses. It'll take you a few days to a week to feel like you have the strength to make it through the day. If you don't feel up for it, it's okay to take a step back...or even work half a day. Just make sure you monitor yourself."
"I will, doctor. Thank you." The doctor left the room and I looked over at John.
"Is that the news you've been hoping for?"
"It is. It really is." I smiled.
"Listen to what the doctor said, though. If you get tired and need to rest, then it's okay to do so. You have to keep an eye on yourself and how you feel."
"I know. I will."
"If you need anything...a ride home or anything, let me know. I don't want you driving if you don't feel up to it."
"Okay, John." I paused. "Thank you for coming with me here today." He smiled and nodded.
"Now, what do you say we get you to work?" Just here that made me full of excitement. John dropped me off at the police station and I told him not to worry about picking me up because I would have Paul take me home after work. When I walked in, Paul had the biggest smile on his face. I guess he missed me after all.
"You look good, Jen. I'm guessing you got some good news this morning?" I smiled.
"Yes, I did. I was beginning to worry because I know how much you need a woman by your side to keep you straight." Paul rolled his eyes. "How was the trip?"
"It was relaxing. We enjoyed it. Christina started classes back today and Julie went back to work at Lowell High School." Just then, our boss' door opened.
"Jen, can you step into my office, please?" I did as told and went into Creighton's office, closing the door behind me.
"You wanted to speak with me, sir?"
"Yes, have a seat." He paused for a minute, making me nervous. "You're all cleared to come back?"
"Yes, sir. I saw my doctor this morning and he said I was good to go."
"That all?" I was hesitant to continue but if I didn't tell Creighton the truth, he would be furious with me when he found out.
"He said I may be tired towards the end of the day for a few days...maybe a week." I rubbed my hand down my leg, worried when I continued that Creighton would say something I didn't want to hear. "He said if I feel bad and too tired, to just take it easy."
"Then that's what you'll do. If you feel like that, just let me know and you can go home or do desk duty the rest of the day." I nodded. "You're free to go." I got up from the chair in front of his desk and closed the door behind me.
"Everything good?" I sat at my desk, facing Paul.
"Yeah, everything's good. What do you say we go patrol the area?" Paul smiled and I followed him out the door of the station.
