We hurried through the streets dodging stray bricks and pieces of shrapnel all the way to the train station. Luckily we got there just in time to jump onto the last train of the evening just as it was pulling out of the station. The train was full of army men and families who were trying to get out of the city after their houses had been destroyed. Children's crying and sniffles filled the air mixed with the occasional yawn and cough from others. We could not find a seat and others were too weary to give up theirs so we stood for over 2 hours until we arrived at Cardiff station by then it was gone midnight and I was exhausted from my eventful evening. I stumbled along behind Miss Peregrine not knowing or caring where we were going. I didn't even realise she had stopped in front of a large opposing building until I bumped into the back of her.
"Here we are Miss Lantuhn, we shall settle her until daybreak and then catch a bus to the island. Now chop, chop one must get all the sleep they can as tomorrow will be another big day for you!" She strode through the door as hurried to keep up with her. My jaw dropped as we walked into the lobby. There was plush sofas surrounding the rooms and most of them were paired with a coffee table that matched the sofas gold upholstery's. my feet sank into the thick carpets covering the wood floor and I ran my fingers along the texture wallpaper not quite believing what I was seeing. But I was snapped out of my fantasy's quicker that you could say loop as Miss Peregrines harsh heels snapped against the floor towards me. "We are in room 12 for the evening. Up we go then" I dragged my feet and suitcase wearily up one flight of stairs and down a corridor until Miss Peregrine pulled out a key and unlocked the door with a number 12 on the front in bold brass numbering. I walked into the room and almost fell into the bed, not bothering to get undressed. As soon as my head hit the pillow and I closed my eyes the world descended into darkness and I was asleep.
My dreams were uneventful due to how tired I was and I woke next morning with a start to see Miss Peregrine gently shaking me awake. "Come on then Miss Lantuhn time for us to go" she said and moved me away allowing me some space and privacy to get ready for the last part of our journey.
The bus ride and ferry to the island went smoothly and Miss Peregrine smoothly led me to a cave away from onlookers, she had already explained to me about their bombed house and hurried loop previously. Once we were inside the cave I hesitated, the anxiety creeping back to me as I worried about the other children's reactions to me "Miss Peregrine... am I the only one here who can't fully control my powers yet." "Well of course not" she replied promptly "Very few peculiars can control their powers when they first discover them, In reality you are very advanced with your controllation considering you did not know of your peculiarity" this reassured my worries and we walked on through the cave as Miss Peregrine carried on. "I am still not quite sure what your peculiarity is yet though Miss Lantuhn, as from your description it seems to come and go and constantly change which is something I have never seen before in a peculiar"
"But you can still help me though can't you?" I questioned
"Of course I can, that is part of an ymbryne's job after all!" And with that we were out of the cave into the warm sunshine of September 3rd 1940. She marched along ahead of me and I hurried to keep up only a few twists and turns later we were stood outside a wall which went up to my chin.
"Here lie the boundaries of the house, you may go anywhere you please inside these walls apart from my personal office and study which you must knock and the same rules apply to the other children's bedrooms. One must always be courteous to others Miss Lantuhn! Outside of these walls is a dangerous world full of unsuspecting normal's and therefore you must ask for my permission, there are other rules but I will explain them in the future now time for you to meet the others."
As we rounded the corner there stood a rather normal assortment of children at first glance but once you looked closer you saw how one had lead shoes, ones toy was squirming around in there hands trying to break free and ones index finger was smoking.
We stopped in front of the group who curiously looked over each other trying to get a good look at me "Children," introduced Miss Peregrine "this is Willow Lantuhn and she shall be living with us from now on"
"h-h-hello" I whispered shyly all my new found confidence disappearing in a heartbeat
"What's your peculiarity?" questioned the boy with the moving doll,
"I-I-I" I stuttered unsure how to answer
"Undeclared" Miss Peregrine stepped in.
Then all of a sudden a boy stepped out from the crown diverting everyone's attention to him or rather the thin air where his head should've bee. This must be Millard I though to myself, well yeah no shit he's the only invisible one I replied wordlessly to my thoughts.
"Honestly that is no way to welcome a new peculiar Enoch. Hello I'm Millard Nulling's and it is a pleasure to meet you." He then took my hand and lead me inside "Now let me give you a tour of the house as none of the others have the courtesy to offer" he said whilst glaring back at them. Well that's what I was presuming he was doing considering I couldn't see him but the others seemed to shrink underneath him.
"Come this way Willow" and I let him lead me away into the foreboding house that was now my home
