CALLISTA

THE ONE THING THAT CALLISTA could remember from her early childhood was her nurse. Her nurse was a godsend to Callista, she was the one that practically raised her. When her father and step-mother went to other people's houses to videotape their sex tape for the day, Callista was taken care of by Carla. Carla always thought of Callista as the daughter she never had, and treated her as such.

Callista could remember one thing that was said to her by Carla, and it was about finding love.

She could remember the day. Carla was making baleadas- Carla was from Honduras- in the kitchen as Callista's nine-year-old body was sitting at the counter, waiting for her food.

"Ya casi?"

"Quédate quieta, ya casi termino." Carla reprimanded gently, smiling over her shoulder at the young Callista.

Callista huffed but looked back down at the book she was reading. She was probably too young to read Twilight, but it's not like anyone cares; no one else but Carla cares about her, and Carla doesn't understand English well enough to know what's up with the book.

Callista has always loved romance books, ever since she started watching PG-13 movies when she was like... not thirteen.

"Carla?"

"Que pasa mi amor?"

"Cuando sabes que te gusta alguien?" Callista asked bluntly.

She's never been one to beat around the bush.

Carla merely laughed as she took the handmade tortilla and put it on the skillet, taking the other one off in the process.

"Cuando te gusta alguien, tu vas a sentir algo que te dice que el es tu futuro. Cuando lo miras a los ojos, vas a sentir algo que nunca has sentido. Mira niña-" Carla took the last tortilla off the skillet and started putting the black beans, eggs and cheese into it. Callista liked mantequilla, but not on her baleadas.
