Wednesday
11.33 p.m.
We are over the crying and apologising and forgiving phase.
I have accepted my mum.
And, my twin brothers.
Mum’s very beautiful.
Now, I know where I got my brown hair from.
“K, who’s the boy?” Mum asks.
“Which boy?”
“The boy that has the same name as Nathan.”
“Oh.” I coo. “That boy.” I ignore the tug in my heart. “What about him?”
“Is he your boyfriend?”
I chuckle. “No, mum. He’s not.”
“Wow.” Mum widens her eyes. “You’re missing a lot, K.”
“Mum!”
“You are! Look at that face of his. You can hardly find that kind of good looks in this generation.”
I chuckle awkwardly.
You are good looking.
I shake my head.
“Can’t miss out on his heart, too. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t even be here to see you.”
“What are you talking about, mum?”
“Didn’t he tell you?”
“Tell me what?”
“He bugged me for a whole week. He came over to the house and said that he was your friend. And that I need to go and see you. Saying that you miss me too much that you’re hurting. When I said I can’t, he camped out of my house. He threatened me saying that he won’t leave until I say yes. I thought he will leave eventually but no he’s so determined. He slept in the cold, shivering. He almost got frost bites. My husband got angry and annoyed. So, in the end I had to say yes and let him in the house to warm up. He did that every day without fail for a week roughly.”
“Mum.” Tears threaten to fall. “Mum, I have to go. Stay here. Don’t move. Don’t go anywhere. Don’t even thi - .”
“I won’t, K.” She smiles reassuringly. “I won’t leave you again.”
“Okay, mum.” I smile. “Thank you.”
I lean in to kiss her cheek.
I run out of the diner.
