I stared at him, most importantly I stared at the absence of Caroline. He had his arms open and was waiting for my reaction. I couldn’t move, my body did not want to move.

“Harry, darling what are you doing?” I heard her, from behind.

“Caroline, I was just greeting Alaine here, who dare I say it quite a surprise to see here.” he directs his attention to me, not even noticing when his girlfriend grunts at him to come back to reality.

“Yes well, I must be on my way. Merry Christmas.” I say, walking away towards Mark. He had just ordered some beer and was coming back to the table.

“Hey there. Where’d you go? The washroom?” he asked me.

I nodded, assuring him I was fine when I was completely the opposite. I sat down and greeted a couple of his friends, but it didn’t work. Nothing truly worked after my mood was turned upside down. Instinctively I glanced over at the booth where Harry was at and I always caught Caroline eating Harry’s face out. He looked so uncomfortable, but I knew he was probably just acting like he didn’t like it. Cause I mean, this woman is experienced, how could he not like what he’s receiving? I scoffed, being beyond annoyed.

“Alaine, whats the matter with you? You seem kind of down. Is there something bothering you?” Mark comes to my side.

“I just…” I have to come up with a lie. Anything other than telling Mark that Harry was here, he would flip this table over his head and probably massacre him. “I want to try some alcohol. Everyone seems to have a nicer time when a little buzz is going on. Would you mind?” I say, regretting it the minute it all came rushing out. He smiled and went to go get me something to drink.

I got up and rushed to the bathroom, once in there all you could smell is lilacs and peppermint. I took a couple breathers and washed my face a bit. When I looked through my purse to find my mascara, someone else came into the washroom. Her heels clicked hard against the polished floor and I didn’t notice who it was until she came up right behind me.

I stared at her through the mirror, realizing she came here to find me.

“Can I help you?” I said.

“Shouldn’t I be asking you that? What are you doing here?” she retaliated.

I turned around to face her, unpleased that she was a tallish woman, complete anger in her eyes and with no good intentions in her stance. “ I believe it’s a public washroom, so if I want to be here I can be.”

“Well aren’t we witty in our remarks? I meant here, in this club, today out of all the days.”

“Look, I came here to celebrate Christmas with friends, not to find you or Harry here.” I said, putting my mascara in the purse.

“You should leave. You’re ruining everything.”

“How am I ruining everything? If anything you should be complaining to your boyfriend.”

She scoffed, putting her hands on her hips. “Oh please, I notice how you look at him. Don’t think I haven’t caught on, you’re that same girl who slapped him. You’re Alaine, the girl he decided to dump for me.” she smiled.

“He didn’t dump me, I dumped him.” I said.

“Either way he came to me. Because I gave him everything you couldn’t, I satisfied him in ways you will never be able to give to him. You don’t understand Harry, but I do. He’s happy with me, don’t you want him happy?”

I could feel my eyes stinging, everything she was saying was true, but how can I not believe her? She did sleep with him for quite sometime, he could have told her all this while they were together.
