Drew led me through the maze of hallways while we followed the rest of the group. He stayed silent and focused on what was in front of us, but I could tell that he was looking for a way to escape and maybe take us with him.
Again, I thought that he would make a good member of the Committee, and I wondered if he would like working for them, keeping the aliens that lived here a secret and protecting the humans from those that did them harm.
I knew that there were some days that I didn't like working with them, but working with them was all that I knew and had done all of my life.
"Do you know where we are going?" I asked Drew, my voice barely above a whisper, while I put my hand through his, and he squeezed my hand reassuringly.
I hated the physical touch of another human being, but I knew that I had to keep up my appearance as a "scared" little girl who was dropped here because her foster parents didn't want her.
"It's so spooky," I said, talking about the place we had gone in. I hid behind him and looked around, making sure that my eyes were wide. My whole body was tense, and it took all of my self-control not to go after the masked men that were watching us walk towards the area where we would get checked.
Drew shrugged, not even caring that I placed my hand in his. "I am as clueless as you are," he admitted. "I am following the group and where they are going." He squeezed my hand reassuringly and gave me a small smile, even though it didn't reach his eyes. "Nervous?" he asked when I ducked to the side of him when we came upon one of the masked men, who was staring at us.
"A little," I admitted, and he nodded. I cleared my throat and licked my lips while I looked around hesitantly, making a mental note of what was around and where there were other hallways. "This place is big. I could get lost here," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Then, I guess you will have to stay near me," Drew said while he smirked down at me. He squeezed my hand, and this time, I could tell that he was reassuring himself that I was near him. "I am good at remembering directions and knowing where we have been. I can make sure that neither one of us gets lost in this maze of hallways."
I pretended to relax and beamed up at him, and he smiled down at me.
I smiled at him, "happy" that he knew which way we had gone, even though I had a feeling that we wouldn't be going that way again, especially since this part wasn't marked as an exit point on the map we were given before all of this stuff.
"Good," I said, "because I think we'll need all the memorization that we can get."

"One at a time," one of the masked men said and pulled me away from Drew roughly. He held me back while Drew tried to pull me back towards him. He glared and Drew backed off and looked at me with sad eyes because we both knew that we were going to be separated.
The male looked down at me and pursed his lips in disgust while he looked me up and down to see how I looked. "Go to where the ten and younger are located," he said and pointed in that direction where there were other tens and younger waiting. "You can't go through here. This line is for those older than ten."
He looked at the badge that I had gotten from some man that had my name and age, and he pursed his lips in disgust. "You are only eight."
I bit back a retort that I wanted to send his way and only nodded. I gave Drew a fearful look, and he smiled and nodded as if to say that everything would be fine.
I offered him one last smile before I started to walk in the direction that the male had pointed, pressing the small button to inject myself with the serum.
I had no idea if it worked or not, but I knew that I'd figure it out once I got over there and have the "tests" run on me like it was planned. Hopefully, it would work because I didn't want to be the cause that the whole plan didn't work.
When I got to the person that was administering the "tests," she didn't look at me. She was busy setting up for everyone else behind me, and I couldn't help but wonder how many children she was going to see.
"Arm," she said and held out her hand for me to put my arm. Still, she didn't look at me, and I could tell that she was bored of this. She didn't like it; I could tell, and I was sure that she was one of the few that wanted to find a different way to survive and not eat children.
I gave her my arm and winced when she drew some of my blood. A small whimper of fear escaped my tight lips, and the lady finally looked at me and smiled sadly.
"Don't worry," she said, pressing the spot where she had drawn blood to stop it from bleeding. Her eyes grew soft while I looked at her with wide eyes. She injected the tracker into my other arm, and my heart pounded in fear. "It'll only sting for a bit. It's to make sure that you are healthy."
Ya, healthy enough to eat, I thought but gave her a small smile.
The lady nodded, and relief filled her eyes when I smiled. She squeezed my hand reassuringly, and I could tell that she was a mother or something in that nature because she cared about me, even though I was only a stranger to her.
"Go and get the rest of your physical done. After that, you will be able to eat, ok?" she asked softly, giving me a small smile.
I nodded and stayed silent before I followed the rest of the kids my "age."
I kept my gaze towards the front and didn't look around like I wanted to because I felt someone's gaze on me. I ignored their, a male, gaze somewhere to my left and tried to make sure that I didn't tense.
I had no idea who it was, but I had a feeling that they knew who and what I was.
Please don't let that foil our mission, I prayed silently while I kept my gaze forward. Please.

Half-Breed
Science FictionBeing different biracial was hard enough in this time and age. Try being a half-breed. Ya, that's right. I said it. Half breed. Half human and half alien. I won't go into how I was made, but I can say that I wasn't able to fit in either world. Sure...
