Devin POV

I stared at the table in front of me for who-knows-how long. I got caught, of all things, which was not supposed to happen. I was supposed to be out of this country and in some secluded island by now. Instead, I was stuck in an isolated, cold room. The only upside was seeing Alice. It helped that she was fun to tease.

A plump man opened the door and sat in the seat across from me. You could tell by the way he held himself that he had high authority. The man really hadn’t changed at all, even after all these years.

“Chief,” I exclaimed. “Long time, no talk. How are the kids?”

          “Wouldn't you like to know?"

“Well, I did just asked, so clearly I want to know.”

“Devin, you just saw me 15 minutes ago. I asked you about your hair, remember?" he looked at me expectantly.

"Sorry, chief, can't give the secret away. It's my hook."

"All right, I'm done with chit chat. How about we cut to the chase?"

“Okay, that works, too.” I crossed my arms, prepared to hear what he had to say.

“Alice tells me that you’re looking for a bargain out of your convictions.”

“I would think of it more as a trade.”

“I don’t really care what you want to call it. All I know is that you want a clean slate for everything, is that right?”

“Yes,” I said with confidence. “I want all of these charges off my back. They’re getting kind of annoying.”

“You do realize that’s a lot to ask for, especially with your circumstance.”

I narrowed my eyes and moved closer. “I realize that I have a lot of information that could help put many notorious people behind bars. It’s up to you if you want my help or not.”

The chief sat there for a second, nodding his head. I waited patiently.

“Okay,” he started. “Suppose I agree to this. Just suppose. You’re saying that with your immunity you’d be willing to give us information to everything about the fire.”

          “Correct.”

He nodded his head again. A few more minutes passed.

“All right,” he said. “I’ll agree to drop your charges if, and only if, you give us all the information you have on the fire –“

          “Deal,” I said immediately.

“– and if you agree to help us in our investigations with your new information.”

          “Wait, what?”

“You heard me. Take it or leave it.”

“I can’t get immunity until I physically help you catch them?” I looked at him like he was crazy.

          “Yup.”

“So I’d have to be a cop?”

          “Something like that.”

“Is this some kind of punishment?”

“Some people would call it honor.”
