Chapter 12

I am jolted awake by the sound of my alarm clock going off. I crawl out of bed, expecting there to be an ache or pain in my right side, but of course there is nothing. I lift up the hem of my shirt and look in the mirror for any signs of the bite mark, but just like the night before it looks as if my encounter with the wolf had never happened.

Not wanting to dwell on the impossible, I waste no time getting ready for school. I put on my usual worn jeans and the first t-shirt I pull out of my drawer. I've never really had a interest for fashion like most girls. I was too busy with more important things, like learning how to take care of myself.

Finishing off my breakfast, I rush out the front door to find the Porsche parked in our driveway. I thought it was still sitting at the reserve since I hadn't had a chance to go back and get it yet. I cautiously open the unlocked door to see a folded note sitting on the driver's seat.

The note is from Scott, explaining that after they couldn't find me the boys drove the car back to my place. They wanted to make sure my mom wouldn't freak out. I'm thankful they did, because my mother might not notice me, but when it comes to work and her car that's all that matters.

As the school day drags on I find it harder and harder to concentrate on my classes. Instead, I'm distracted by the questions swimming around in my head. With the biggest question still remaining, what exactly had happened in the woods the other night?

But that's not the only reason for my wandering mind. I feel like everything is ten times louder today, causing me to have a major headache. Maybe it's just a side effect of loosing too much blood, but I feel like every locker slamming shut and every chair getting scraped across the ground is right in my ear. At lunch the problem doesn't get any better. It's like every conversation has been amplified. As I sit alone waiting for Stiles and Scott I hear bits and pieces of people's conversations. Across the room Lydia is talking to Allison about how much Jackson must miss her after the break up, but by hearing her tone I know that she's the one that misses him more.

So involved in trying to block out people's conversations I don't hear Stiles come up behind me until it's too late. "Hey Lucy, are you okay? You don't look too good." His voice pierces into my ear drums.

I wince as Scott walks over and lets his tray clatter onto the table. "I'm fine. Just a little tired, that's all." Something about Scott's expression tells me he knows I'm lying.

After lunch I try my best to get through the rest of the day not looking like my eardrums are about to explode. So when the final bell rings I couldn't be more relieved to get out of there. By the time I close my locker door almost everyone has cleared out of the halls- well almost everyone.

As I'm walking down the hall I start to hear the faint murmur of familiar voices coming from a nearby classroom. Scott and Stiles. I would have kept walking, knowing it is rude to eavesdrop if I hadn't heard them mention my name.

"Stiles, I think something's wrong with Lucy." Scott says, his voice filled with concern.

Stiles lets out a long sigh. "Ya, she seemed a little off at lunch today. But, she's probably still shaken up after that wolf tried to attack us the other day."

I know I should stop listening, but I need to figure out why they are talking about me, about the wolf.

"But it's more than that. There's something different about her now." Scott's comment is unsettling despite how little he knew about me to begin with.

Stiles hesitates with his answer, "You don't think she got turned, do you?" Turned? What was Stiles even be talking about?

"There is a good chance. I mean you saw the way she was acting at lunch today. But if she did, something tells me Derek hasn't gotten to her yet." I almost miss what Scott says over the loud scoffing of feet. What does Derek have to do with any of this?

"Well if Derek did turn her then we need to find out soon, because the full moons in less than a day!" Stiles explains.

Before I have time to process what they said I hear the doorknob turning. If Scott and Stiles catch me out here they are going to know that I overheard their conversation. The last thing I needed was for them to start asking how I was able to overhear them, when I don't even know the answer to that question myself. What am I suppose to tell them, that I developed super hearing overnight?

I hurry down the hall and out the front doors. It takes me half the time it usually does to walk home. I'm starting to get worried that something terrible might be happening to me, like my bodies flooding with adrenaline and eventually I'll just collapse in exhaustion. I decide to burn off some extra energy, picking up my pace into a quick jog. I run full out for a hour without even breaking a sweat.

Running is quite peaceful, until I pass the animal clinic only to spot Scott coming out the side door. After overhearing his conversation with Stiles I really don't want to have to confront him. I try my best to keep my head down as I run past the building, but with no such luck.

"Hey Lucy, just the girl I needed to talk to." Scott calls out.

Panicking, I pick up speed and run as if I hadn't heard him. Unfortunately, Scott is much faster then me on his bike and catches up quickly. "Lucy wait up, this is important."

I continue to ignore him as I weave threw lamp posts and trashcans, finally loosing him when I duck into an alleyway. I turn around and come face to face with Stiles chocolate brown eyes.
