Chapter 21
"Derek, I might be new to the whole werewolf thing, but I am pretty sure I read somewhere that a wolf pack only has one alpha. How is it possible for there to be a whole pack of them?" I ask.
"An alpha pack is a very possible, very dangerous thing and they're already here. They left a warning sign on my house- a declaration of war."
So, not only do I have werewolf hunters to deal with, but now I have to worry about a bunch of power thirsty alphas.
Derek watches me carefully as I process this new information. "Look, I know you don't want to trust me, but can you listen to me this one time?"
I nod. Despite Derek's past mistakes, I believe his intentions to keep me safe are genuine.
"You need to stay out of the woods for a few weeks. With the alpha pack's recent attack and the hunters growing suspicious, I can guarantee they're not done with you yet and either are the hunters." Derek explains.
"Okay fine, I wont go near the woods." Figuring our conversation has come to an end, I turn to leave.
But the silence is broken by Derek as his voice drops to a low whisper, "I just don't want to see you get hurt."
As I walk back towards town, I find myself shocked by the very thought of Derek caring about me. I really thought he was a cold hearted, jerk- but maybe, I was wrong.
I make it back to my house around six o'clock and open the front door to find my mother leaning against the kitchen counter, with what looks like no electronic device in sight. That is my first clue something is terribly wrong. I walk in the direction of my room, but she puts her hand out to stop me. "Where did you go? I have been worried sick about you." Her words sound motherly, but her tone is far from concerned.
Taken back by her words, it takes me longer to come up with a decent response. "I was sleeping over at a friend's house."
My mother stares down at me with a look of dominance. "It would have been nice to call and tell me. You have been missing for two days. You are lucky I didn't file a missing person report."
Her words cause me to snap, "See that's the thing, you didn't. A real mother would call the police hours after their child doesn't come home, but no, you wait two days. I might have just been with a friend, but what if I was seriously hurt?" I look directly into her green eyes. "That's right, you would be to busy with work to even notice."
I try to manoeuvre around her, but her hands press against my should, pushing me back into place. "How dare you talk to me like that! I am your mother. Lately you have been running around, not caring when you come home. Well, I have had enough with your attitude towards me. You are grounded." Her threat means nothing to me.
I laugh. "You might have given birth to me, but ever since Dad left you stopped being my mother. Staying out of my life for years doesn't give you the right to decide when to be a real parent and when to shut me out. So, you can't ground me." With no patience left, I push her hard enough to stumble out of my way and I rush to my room.
Once I pass over the threshold, I turn and lock my door, knowing my mother will be right behind me. She has never liked being told she's wrong and a bad temper only adds to that. Soon, her fist begins to pound on the door, but I ignore the banging. I trudge towards my bed, in desperate need of some rest. I can feel something is off, though. My scrambled senses are picking up on an unknown presence, but the scent is not from anyone I recognize. I check my closet- knowing there isn't very many place they can hide in my small room, but whoever it was is long gone by now.
I flop down onto the mattress of my bed, hitting the back of my head off a hard surface. I lift my pillow up to find a small wooden box hidden under the fabric. The box has a symbol etched into the dark wood that looks similar to the tattoo I've seen on Derek's back. This symbol is different. His tattoo is a triangle that stems off into three spirals. but this one has a triangle in the centre that forms into three jagged lines.
I open the box's latch to find a small silver necklace gleaming back at me. Taking a closer look, I realize the pendant has a wolf engraved into the centre with a triangle outlining the animal. A long chain dangles from my hand. The necklace is beautiful, but who sent it? Better question, how did this stranger managed to get in my room?
I slip the old chain over my head and start towards the door. At the last second I realize that may not be the best idea. I jump out the window instead and head in the direction of the woods.
I know I promised Derek I would stay out of the woods, but this is a emergency. I catch his sent and follow it until I have reached the familiar burned down house. Cautiously, I shuffle up to the door and resist the urge to knock. If Derek is home, he will hear me. Growing anxious, I get ready to barge through the door, but something causes me to stop. Carved into the door is the same symbol that was engraved on the box I found in my room and the necklace currently resting around my neck.
"I thought I told you to stay out of the woods? What are you doing here?" Derek asks, appearing from around the side of his house.
"I want to know what this symbol means?" I hold up my necklace.
Derek tugs on the piece of jewellery, causing the chain to dig into the back of my neck. "Where did you get this?" He yells at me.
"I came home to find this sitting on my bed. Somehow, someone managed to get into my house and leave it as a gift. So, what does it mean?" I ask again.
Derek sighs. "It is their symbol- the alpha pack's."
Exhausted, I sit down on the porch's rickety stairs. "What do they want with me?" I ask, afraid for the answer.
Derek hesitates before speaking, "They bit you, which means you are their beta. My best guess, they want you to help get rid of their newest threat- me."
Well, this is just great. "What do I do now?" I am lost in this new world and as much as I hate to admit it, I need Derek to help guide me.
"You need to go home and get some rest, I will call you when I can find anything else out." I nod and Derek goes back inside.
Walking through the forest seems like a better option than having to face my mother again. But I know I can't keep running. I will have to go back eventually.
The impending darkness no longer scares me as much as it should, but the thought of what could be lurking in the shadows is still unsettling. Especially when there is a pack of alphas running around that want my help to kill the legendary Derek Hale.
To busy with my own thoughts, I don't hear the sound of crunching boots as someone approaches me, until it's too late. A boy no older than me steps casually out of the bushes, blocking my path.
He has short brown hair that spikes up at the front and dark brown eyes. He has a defined jaw line and a muscular build. Puny in size comparison, I wouldn't be able to beat him in a fight. "Well hello, you must be Lucy." His casual greeting sends chills up my spine. "My name is Ethan." His mischievous smile quickly turns dark as his eyes begin to glow a familiar red.
My body reacts before my mind can process what is happening and I turn to run. I slam into someone standing behind me, letting out a yelp as my nose connects with their shoulder. Rubbing my throbbing nose, I look up and come face to face with Ethan- or so I thought. Behind me Ethan still stands in the same spot I left him in.
Finally Ethan speaks, "Lucy, I would like you to meet my twin brother, Aiden."
