I'd Rather Not Be Incinerated

    "Oh bloody Hell!"

I'm starting to wonder if the Big Guy Upstairs had some some to pick with me. Had I done something to offend him? If not, why in His name was my life like this. It was just my luck that the one thing I loved, yes you heard that right...loved, was caught up in this world ending event.

"That's just lazy writing" I sighed, rubbing the back of my head. Danwer gave out a wry laugh and nodded in agreement. [[{ I can really feel the love }]]

"What are we gonna do? Hold her inside the lock and twist? Isn't that a bit brutal?" I asked[[{curtesy of supremacy123}]], still trying to wrap my mind around the whole 'my-girlfriend-is-a-key' thing.

"What? Ew no!...that would be messy" he said. He was about to say continue speaking but a loud roar interrupted us from our conversation. It sounded distant and I readied my sword as a precaution.

Danwer did the same with his axe and we stood with our backs against each other. After a minute or so, realising that it was safe, I walked a few steps forward. The looked above and saw a few rays of moonlight enter through small cracks on the sealing. Only a ten feet radius of ground, the one that we were standing upon, was illuminated by the light.

Past that, all one could see was darkness. Occasionally, I saw tiny spots of light in the darkness that lasted for a few seconds before extinguishing themselves. I summoned a small ball of hellfire in my hand but as soon as I did, the walls look like they got a jolt of life. Blue sparks sprouted from the walls and traced small lines of flame.

I watched as one of the lines of fire burnt towards a yellowish rock. I went closer but Danwer yelled from behind me, "Don't!" he said. Before I could react, the rock exploded in a fiery inferno of blue and red. I was pushed back by a rather large piece of stone that hit me on my lower chest. The pain was too much for me to handle and I lay on my back on the ground.

The great Percy Jackson was killed by a rock...Jason would be proud.

I gasped and coughed, trying to catch my breath. Every time I inhaled, a pungent and disgusting smell filled my lungs...and my mouth. I could literally taste the putrid stink. Danwer ran beside me and I saw him inspect my abdominal area.

"That..." he started "was Sulphur...pure Sulphur. Apparently the cave walls are rich in the substance. Easily combustible and leaves a nasty odour. Did I also mention that the gas is poisonous in large quantities?"

"Oh shut up and fix me" I said, coughing between words. Danwer opened his utility belt, one that I didn't know he had, and took out some gauze and a bottle of what I hoped was disinfectant. He removed the lower part of my shirt and assessed the situation.

I looked down and saw that the shrapnels of rock had pierced my skin, causing it to leak red glowing blood. Normally, the wound was small enough for me to heal it myself. But this time something felt different. It had something to do with this place.

The surroundings area was strengthening me a bit, which is normal considering anything closer to hell fuels me, but some other kind of force was draining my energy at a much faster pace. It was like the feeling you get when you're at home, except the fact that you have no idea where you are and it's freaking you out.

Danwer wrapped the gauze around the burnt area after applying the disinfectant and a golden coloured liquid; mead. For a moment, he was surprised when the mead started glowing and I absorbed the light.

He then sighed like that wasn't the weirdest thing that he had seen all day, which was actually true. After a few deep sulphurous breaths and many protests from Danwer, I stood up and groaned as the pain hit me. I thought about summoning hellfire to heal me as much as it could but then I remembered what happened the last time I lit hellfire in this cave of sulphur.

I settled for shouting curses and yelling the occasional 'go to your happy place' instead.

I raised my blade and supplied it with a very small amount of power, enough for it to glow but not enough to catch flames. The last thing I wanted was more fireworks.

The blade gave off a soft orange light that illuminated the cave we were in. I motioned Danwer to follow me, to which he quietly obliged. The sword irradiated the cavern walls. The walls, along with the floor and ceiling, were made up of lapis, it's striking blue colour captivating the attention of anyone who looked at it.

If you looked closely, you would see numerous streaks of yellow sulphur in between the cracks of the oceanic blue rock. It reminded me of the time I had a paintball fight with a bunch of sharks.

The sharks ended up being painted yellow and showing off about their 'shiny-ness'

After walking a minute or so through the treacherous landscape of the cave, there was a sudden change in the terrain. The floor was now a reddish brown, with stalagmites of various sizes growing at random spaces.

There were also numerous vents which ejected hot steam at regular intervals. Some were only the size of my fist while I saw one that was big enough to fit a truck. I wonder where I would land if I were to jump into one of them. Better not try.

"Reminds me of a trip I once took to a small unnamed island in the middle of the pacific a few centuries ago...deadly but beautiful" said Danwer, taking in the view that lay ahead of us. I wondered how exactly he travelled to the middle of the pacific when planes weren't invented and boats were unreliable dangerous, but I kept it to myself.

Then I got to thinking about how I knew next to nothing regarding Danwer, not even his real name. "Hey Danwer" I started, "what's...your name...the real one?"

Almost immediately his mood turned somber and a scowl appeared on his face. He looked at me with an expression that clearly stated that the topic was off-limits. Surprised by his sudden change in mood, I raised my hands in surrender and backed away.

We walked ahead, avoiding the super hot streams of gas from the volcanic vents, until we heard the voice. It was nothing more than a whisper but it was clear enough for both of us to hear. It reminded me of a hyena snarling and with it, came a feeling of impending doom.

It said only one word and yet I knew that a fight was inevitable. One word...which could very well be the last thing I heard.

"Lightbringer!" It said and all hell broke loose
