Emily's POV
"So, Em, you ready for your new prison sentence?" Kara called out from the kitchen. I scoffed out a light laugh and rolled my eyes as a straightened my deep blue blazer. "Kara, it's not a "prison sentence"! It's just a new job!"
"Yeah but you have to work in an office! You don't think that's disgusting?" She asked with urgency, now plopping her skinny frame in my bedroom doorway. I sighed again, smiling at my friend. Grabbing my dark brown shoulder bag, I walked past her while I spoke. "No, it's not the ideal job setting for me, maybe, but I'm still going to do my best at it."
"Atta girl, Em." Adriane chimed in from the living room of our apartment. "Don't listen to Barbie, I'm sure you'll nail this."
"Yeah right, you're gonna nail this job or is this job gonna nail you?" Kara joked. I laughed out loud and so did Adriane.
"Funny, Kara! But seriously it's just a job! I'll survive. It's not as if something will catch me off guard." My phone suddenly buzzed on the coffee table. Ozzie, who was peacefully sleeping next to it, jumped up startled, before I grabbed it, reading the words on the screen in my head; Be on time; 7:45.
"Ah! I'm almost going to be late. See you guys, I've gotta go!"
"Alright, Em, good luck!" Kara shouted.
"Go get em, kid!" Adriane chimed in.
I smiled. "I will, bye!"
After I locked the door to our new apartment I ran down the hallway to the elevators. Stepping onto the street once I reached the ground floor of the complex was, surreal, to say the least. Yes, I'm well aware that I have no room to talk; I'm a healer mage after all. I have been since I was 12. Now that I'm 20, I definitely have a little more experience, however, it still doesn't mean I'm used to quirks.
When Adriane, Kara and I travelled to Japan for our new job opportunities through our colleges, we never expected to find a place where almost everyone around us had powers like us. Of course, we had to register as quirkless, even though we had powers, we did not possess quirks, and even then, the Fairymentals made sure we understood years ago, our secret was to never be revealed, even with something like this. God, how I hate keeping secrets. Despite keeping my magical life from my family, friends, and everyone except my fellow mages and magical animals for the past 8 years, I still cannot shake the feelings of guilt that take me over every time I have to lie. Unfortunately, even with my new job, I'll have to lie more. I'm sure my boss will be easy to deal with though, I've heard he's easy going and laid back, almost too much. Lying to him should be a breeze.
I was so lost in my thoughts, I hardly noticed that I had already arrived to my destination.
I felt a small wave of intimidation wash over my somehow now tiny frame. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was huge.
The glorious glass building towered over everyone and everything around it somehow so effortlessly. I gripped my binder tightly, was I cut out for this? No, stop it, Emily. I needed to stop psyching myself out. I could absolutely do this. Don't be intimidated, nothing's going to happen.
Walking into that building was like walking into a pack of hyenas and all you were was a lonely ant. Everywhere I looked, amazing Heroes, everywhere I turned. I felt that similar wave of intimidation flow again as I stepped closer to the front desk, but I pushed it deep inside in order to not screw up my impressions.
"Good morning," I faked my confidence. "My name is Emily Fletcher, I'm here for-"
"Oh!" The desk girl cut me off. "Hawks' new intern! Yes, we've been waiting for you!" She smiled at me, and I paused, taken aback a bit. Luckily, I regained my composure quickly and smiled back at her.
"Yes! That's me. I was actually going to ask where I should report to?"
She beamed again, nodding. "Ah, yes of course! You'll actually be meeting Hawks in his office, he'll be going over your duties for today with you."
I strained. I was meeting my boss already? Although I was confused, I smiled and nodded. "Alright, sounds great."
"Good, just take this elevator here, and go all the way up to the top floor. You'll find his office there." I nodded as she pointed me to the all glass elevator.
"Alright, thank you!"
"Of course! Good luck!"
I smiled back at her before the elevator doors closed. The first notice I took notice of was the elevator itself; it moved way faster than any other elevator I've seen. It was so pristine. The walls were a polished blue tinted glass that shone in the sun that came through the seemingly endless windows. Whoever made this place sure enough wanted to be seen everywhere within 10 miles of here. I thought to myself. To be honest, I thought it was a bit egotistical. The Hero who owns this place must be quite full of themself, if not that then just, blind to anyone but themselves. I couldn't tear myself away from that thought.
When I meet him, this Hawks, I could already start to put a shape together of who I would get acquainted with.
He will no doubt be egotistical, I will meet him and he will almost immediately want to talk about himself, which is probably why he wanted to speed up our meeting to be so soon. I was only hired last week, and now I was meeting my boss on my first day, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that whoever was pushing for meeting that quickly would obviously want something out of it. I couldn't put my finger on what it would be though, and as the elevator got closer to the top floor, I wondered slightly if I was somehow, overthinking? Maybe Hawks wasn't full of himself.
Ding!
Maybe he was just eager to meet his new employee. Maybe I'm not the only one he's done this to. Perhaps he really will be a calm, collected but centered and serious worker. Yes, that has to be it.
No. I was very wrong. This mans ego has got to be bigger than this building.
The sign on the door was so big it could've blinded me. I stood outside the big wood door, staring at the large gold sign plastered across the front, with red letters dented into the metal, carvings of red feathers floating underneath the words:
Winged Hero Hawks
'Absolutely no way he's compensating for something, huh?' I thought rolling my eyes. I shook off my mocking, as funny as it was, and took a deep breath. I straightened my blazer, shoved my binder into my bag and grabbed the knob. As I turned it and opened the door, I took one more deep breath, thinking there was no way this winged hero could catch me off guard. No way this man could ever sweep me off my feet, so much that I'd forget my name, so much that I'd run away, so much that I'd reveal my secrets. No way in hell. He's just a man after all.
"Good morning," I smiled professionally at the desk with the chair turned around. I couldn't believe he wouldn't even give me the time of day to look at his new assistant, until he did turn around.
"Hey there, Miss Fletcher."
