a/n: welcome back to high school AU. this is part 2 and will most likely be the last part of the AU. also a reminder that in high school Atticus would've been drastically different than the adult Atticus so she's kinda more of an asshole than she usually is lol.

TW: description of injuries due to abuse

--

What had started as one day of wild adventure quickly turned into blossoming friendship, and then--becoming 'High School Sweethearts'. Although, the two of them usually wouldn't use such an endearing term because the whole school was extremely confused when the crazy punk and the dork started dating. Which, of course, led to tons and tons of jokes about them. But none of that ever fazed Atticus (even though most of the time anyone was brave enough to say anything to her face about it they got their ass kicked) because it was the one thing she had that made her feel--happy, even if she was forced to keep it a secret at home.

So, just like she did every day, she quickly forced her way through the halls all the way to Spencer's locker, "Hi!"

"Hi.", he huffed out a laugh at her enthusiasm and by the look on her face and the way she was shifting on her feet, he could tell that there was something else she wanted to say but was holding back for his sake, "What?"

"My parents are gonna be out of town this weekend.", she smiled.

"Is that you're way of asking me to take you home and stay with you?"

"Yes. But, I have softball practice after school."

"That's fine. I have to coach basketball practice after school anyway--wait, I thought you were practicing with the band today?"

"No! We're on hiatus, remember?"

"Oh, right. Why...again?"

"I thought you had an eidetic memory?"

"I do."

"So, you're basically admitting that you don't listen to me."

"I never said that."

"Ok, whatever. We're on a hiatus because every sick-ass rock, punk, or grunge band goes on hiatus at some point."

"Got it, I will definitely remember this time."

"Right...", she said, definitely not believing him but he didn't get a chance to protest this before the bell rang, "Ok, bye!", she pulled him down towards her and planted a quick kiss on his lips. And although this wasn't nearly the first time they'd kissed, it still made him blush intensely.

Luckily, their practices ended only within 5 minutes of each other so when Atticus was finished, she just went straight to the gym. She already thought it was incredibly cute that he coached the basketball team instead of actually playing, but watching him do it was somehow even cuter. He blew the whistle and dismissed the group of boys, interlocking his fingers with hers.

"Yeah, whatever. See ya later, loser."

And upon hearing this, Spence knew that there was no way this interaction was ending well for the kid. Honestly, having Atticus always jump to his defense for him feel even more like a loser but it was also nice to know that she cared that much, even before they were friends.

"What did you just fucking say?", and now he really knew this wasn't going to end pretty when he saw the glint of anger behind her eyes that was never there when she looked at him.

"Hey, hey--I was just kidding."

"Shut up.", she demanded, pushing him down so that he fell on his knees, "I bet you think you're a real big shot, Lopez, huh? Well, I hate to break it to you but there's a reason we got into two of the best Ivy League schools and you didn't. In fact, you're all nothing but egotistical fucks that seem to forget that you lost every single game before he started coaching."
