“We’re here.”

Penny opens her eyes, and finds Luke’s car pulled in front of a beautiful meadow-ish area, like one you would see in a movie.

“Do you like it?  If you don’t we could always go – ”

“No.  Luke, it’s amazing.  How did you ever find this place?”

“I’ve been through some…hard times in the past few years.  I would come here and let out all my feelings.”

Luke exits the car, and opens up Penny’s car door.  “After you,” he grins.

The two go and sit on a bench overlooking the lake.  The lake was so eerily still, the only movement was the occasional ripple, distorting the reflection of the full moon depicted right in its center.

“I have a question for you,” Penny declares quickly, before the courage to do so disappears.

“Ask away.”

“Were you and June, like, together or – ”

“I take you out and you choose to ask about my ex-girlfriend.”  Luke chuckles.  “Only you.”

“Oh, so she was your girlfriend?” Penny can’t hide the disappointment in her voice.

“Yes, she was.  But, it was nothing serious.  She was popular, I was popular.  She was hot – ” Penny cringes.  “Sorry, I didn’t mean that.”

“It’s fine, you don’t have to apologize.”

“I’m a jock.  Everyone sees me as a stereotypical, asshole, football captain jock.  She was a cheerleader.  A stereotypical, popular, slutty cheerleader.  It only made stereotypical sense that we would date.  I never even liked her.”  He sounded proud.  “But everyone else thought that I should.  In a perfect world, she and I would get married.  We would have perfect children and vacation to Rome like every other fucking month.  But, this isn’t a perfect world.  I’m not the guy everyone sees me as.”

“I understand.”  Images float into Penny’s head of her best friend Michael.  That in a perfect world, with no complications, Michael would still be her best friend.  Michael would be making jokes about how whipped Penny is, and wouldn’t be paranoid 24/7 for some unsaid reason.  In a perfect world, Penny would be happy right now, sitting with the guy of her dreams.

Both Penny and Luke are quiet, each thinking about their own perfect world.  The only sound disrupting their thoughts is of the crickets chirping, and the occasional frog croaking.

“Why would you choose me?” Penny’s voice comes out as merely a whisper.  “June is pretty, popular.  I’m a loser that fucks everything up.  I can’t even manage to keep my only friend without – ”

“Shhhhh.” Luke wipes the tear off of Penny’s cheek.  “Some things are out of your control.  You can’t predict how people will react.  You couldn’t stop Michael from leaving.  He would have left anyway.”  “Fucking jealous pussy,” he adds under his breath.

Before Penny could respond, Luke stands up from the bench and takes off his shirt, his back facing her.

“A little early for a strip show,” Penny remarks with a sad smirk on her face.

Luke turns around to look at Penny, revealing his perfectly toned chest.  It was almost too hard for Penny to resist the urge to reach out and touch him.  Luke has an amused expression on his face as he watches Penny admire his bare torso.
