but i crumble completely when you cry
it seems like once again you've had to greet me with goodbye

i sung along with the arctic monkeys song as i walked to the school. i planned to keep my head down at school. i also planned on keeping my earbuds in for as long as i could.

i should've known that i wouldn't be able to stay sad for long, since my friend alice was going to be with my today. i saw her come up from the opposite way and i gestured for her to come towards me. she grinned widely and started running towards me.

"heyyyy! hi y/n!" she double greeted me. she always enjoyed saying hi and then saying a separate hi with the person's name. i giggled, slipping out a "hi alice!" she looked around us like she was going to talk smack about someone.

"what the fuck are you doing slice?" slice was my nickname for alice. once, when i was texting her i accidently typed slice instead of alice and it just kind of stuck.

"i heard that there's going to be a new student. a new boy." she grinned. i looked at her blankly as my eyes searched her face.

"oh, that's cool. but i thought alex was your one true love?" i responded simply. "hey!" she snapped. "i can simp for famous people and like real life people too." she flipped her hair dramatically and we both giggled.

"no, really, though. i've heard that he's cute." slice said seriously. "but we all know i don't simp over real boys. fictional characters and famous boys are more my type." i scoffed and jokingly rolled my eyes.

my mind wandered to alice's problems. she suffered emotional abuse at both of her parents houses, but neither of them knew it. her parents were divorced, but that didn't cause many problems for her. she was biromantic and asexual and her dad was homophobic, but her mom didn't really know how to deal with lgbtq+ stuff. she also got her heart broken when she was 14. it was devastating for her. that was causing her lots of problems. she was 100% sure she and depression and adhd, but her parents wouldn't let her go to a phycologist.

"y/n?" i snapped back to reality as alice called my name. "sorry, slice, i zoned out." she nodded understandably. "oh your fine, i get it."

my eyes widened and i quickly grabbed alice's arm and blurted, "oh, alice, you'd never believe what happened this morning."

"wow. a month? that's insane, even for your parents." i muttered a few words of agreement and nodded my head. "but that means more sleepovers! woohoo!" alice cheered playfully. i smiled at her and admired her beauty.

"what are you doing? admiring my beauty?" she asked, completely joking, but i responded completely honestly. "yes." she smiled, blushed, but then bit her lip. i knew why, but i didn't say anything.

"here's to being platonic soulmates." i put out my pinky. "yeah!" she said enthusiasticly, intertwining our pinkies, and pulling each other into a hug. we joked and laughed the rest of the way to school.

before we walked into the school, i pulled alice aside, into the side of the school where we could talk in private. "hey, i just wanted to say," i started speaking as i pulled up her new instagram post, "you looked really pretty in your newest post!"

"aww thank you!" alice squealed. despite knowing that she was pretty, she needed validation and ego boosters daily, and so i was always there to provide them for her. she wrapped her arms around me, pulling me in tight.

"you mean a lot to me, y/n. i hope you know that." alice said while digging her face into the crook of my neck. i smiled and chuckled softly. "uno reverse card," i responded with a chuckle. she scoffed and lifted her head up to look at me.

i grinned at her and she pulled away from the hug. "in all seriousness, we should probably get to class." i nodded at her. "you're probably right."

i know that this isn't really an important chapter, but i wanted the readers to get a chance to meet slice and get to know her! and the best friend is never really a main character in fanfics, and i wanted this one to be different :)

also, another note, alice is loosely based off of me. so basically all of the problems that alice has, i do. except i got my heart broken earlier.
