Carina Black was fortunate to have a happy childhood – which was actually a rare occurrence for a demigod. She grew up in Manhattan with her parents, her pet dog, and close family friends, she managed to travel, go to amusement parks and win numerous carnival games (even the rigged ones) that she had a collection of stuffed animals in her room (her most prized possession was the winged black dog that she won in a balloon popping contest). She went to the beset schools, yes, schools – emphasis on the "s" since for the past eight years, she already enrolled in eight schools and all kicked her out just as the term ended. And all the while that happened, she was dealing with her Dyslexia and ADHD, and surviving monsters that were trying to kill her. It was a very happy childhood.
But Carina did not know that those incidents that caused her expulsion were caused by these monsters that pestered her daily life, for a while, she believed that these were just coincidences – just like the time when she tried to kill a huge spider that her friend Ron said has been following them and was afraid, she accidentally hit too hard on the creature that she caused the multiple glass shelves to fall domino style. They were in a museum that time. Or when she pulled the fire alarm because she though she saw the kitchen lady breathing fire. Or the time when she and Harry were playing dodge ball during Phys. Ed. and her distant cousin, Draco Malfoy, was sending his goods to throw balls at them, and it ended up like one of those survival reality-shows where really fast, heavy, and deadly balls were hurled at their way, and Carina only got them to stop by hitting these huge goons with a couple of balls, the end result though, the gymnasium was completely wrecked, and Carina was blamed for what happened. She was the last one standing.
There were other times as well, but her mother, would not let her dwell on those memories since it always made Carina upset. And every time she was expelled, her father would just shrug and say, "Too bad for them, guess they can't handle the awesomeness of Carina Black." And her support group extended from their parents – her godfather, Remus, also encouraged Carina to see the bright side in things, while her best friend, Harry, and his parents, helped her family to find new schools, and all the while they would say, "Don't worry, even we had our fair share of trouble", but Carina doubted that the trouble her father, Uncle James, and Uncle Remus get in to when they were her age did not end up them getting expelled from their schools.
But little did she knew, the small happiness she found in her messed-up life would suddenly take a dark turn when she and her family were suddenly visited by an uncle, she never knew she had.
It was during summer vacation when it happened. Carina was back at home for Christmas, and her family were planning to spend their month-long vacation with a trip to go the beach with the Potters and – if her father and Uncle James could convince him – Uncle Remus. But for the first few days, the family of three were spending their nights in the comforts of their home in Manhattan, wearing their pajamas, all snuggling in the couch, along with her pet, Snuffles – a cute, black Labrador Retriever puppy – snuggling on her lap, and, lastly, a bowl of popcorn while watching a British movie adaptation of the book she was in love with, it was about a wizard with a lightning scar, and though this was her fifth time watching this movie, she still enjoyed the part when the giant burst through the door with a cake and told the protagonist, "Yer a wizard, Harry.", maybe it was because the protagonist shared the same name of her childhood best friend that made it very funny.
