Chapter 1 (Gansey's POV)
When I got a letter in the mail from the palace I immediately was filled with disgust. Even being a five and hungry, a beautiful palace is the last place I'd ever want to be. The selection where princess Blue will choose to marry. Suitors from all over the country can put in an application to be one of the thirty five to go to the palace. I walked back from the mailbox towards my poor looking house as my 1973 Camero sitting in the driveway caught my eye. I shed a small tear because it was so beautiful and went inside.
"Oooh what's that?" my little sister Helen said, trying to grab the letter from my hand.
"Nothing" I said chucking it in the trash "I am NOT going to spend a month in a palace with some stuck up princess trying to get her to marry me ew"
I'm not like the other guys that are all obsessed with her. I didn't even LOOK like the guys that would even try to send in the application for the selection, with my dusty brown hair hazel eyes, and wire rimmed glasses, I'd be the last boy she would ever choose to be a prince. Plus from what I've seen on tv, she's the most annoying girl to ever live.
"Oh come on Gansey, it would be fun to at least turn in an application, you don't have to marry her, but you could get free food!" My mom said with a cheery smile as she walked into the room
"But mom, I'm average!" I yelled, I stormed up to my room and threw myself onto the bed screaming into my pillow. I then heard a BONK at my window and looked up. Someone was throwing stones at my window. I got up and looked out to see Cassia Glendower, my secret girlfriend, climbing up our tree into the treehouse where we would always meet. I wiped the snot from my nose from crying and climbed outside.
As soon as I stepped into the treehouse cassia jumped on me and gave me a bear hug
" I missssed you" she squeaked
"I missed you too" I said looking at her, and then we kissed for like two hours or something till it was sunset.
"Did you get your letter from the palace today?" She asked, "my brothers did they've already sent in their applications
"I did but I threw it away, I couldn't leave you!I probably won't even get picked I lovvve you I could never love her ew"
"Just do it" she sighed
"Okay fine" I said, getting up to leave
'Wait! Take this to remember me by" she handed him a small white puffy piece of tree pollen
" I caught it off a moving train when my grandpa was dying, it always comforts me I want you to have it" she said, her eyes watery holding out the pollen for me to take.
"Thanks" I said stuffing it into my pocket and leaving her before she started reciting poetry, she always did that when she would start talking about her grandfather.
"Okay I'll do it" I exclaimed to my family when I walked into the cramped living room. I was only doing it for the money though. I could never fall in love with anyone other than Cassia.
