My name is Hazel Wong, and I am very nearly grown up. I see that more and more everyday, but it really did seem true last Thursday night just after lights out, when our dorm mates, Kitty, Beanie and Lavinia, were chatting about what university they want to go to.

"I'm not going to university" scoffed Lavinia haughtily. "I'm going to fight in the Spanish Civil War-"

"With George, yes, yes we remember." said Kitty, rolling her eyes.

George and Lavinia had been writing to one another since Christmas; and Lavinia blushed whenever he was mentioned, and hid their letters in the waistband of her skirt, like I do with Alexander's.

"Mum and Dad want me to go to somewhere like Cambridge" Kitty continued. "But I'm going to be a fashion designer, so I don't really need all that nonsense. What about you Beans?"

"Well.... I'm not really sure" squeaked Beanie. She had grown even more, and was a tiny bit taller than me, which still is rather small.

"I think I want to be... maybe a nurse. I'm a bit squeamish sometimes, but I do really want to help people! Where do nurses go to university?"

"Girls! No talking after lights out!" called matron.

They all mumbled their apologies, and fell silent.

I rolled over, and lay awake wondering what I'd like to be when I'm grown up. Its only 1 year until we leave Deapdeen, and I'm still not sure what I am going to be! Of course, I'd love to be a detective, but I'm not so sure that Father would approve of me being in danger for a full-time job! Daisy will be a detective, there's no doubt about that. I suppose you could say she is one already, after the case from the government that we solved together (though she does not like to admit that I helped her). Of course, the others all think Daisy is dead, and it was very difficult for me to act like she doesn't exist, and not talk about her.
