In all my many, many years living and healing in Possibility, I never met another dragon quite like the young adolescent who resided at the corner of Scale Lane. Her name was Candlelight, and she was the lovely daughter of a Nightwing and a Skywing who had moved here nearly a decade back and decided to start a family. She was always such a curious, thoughtful, bright, determined, and caring dragonet, who was an absolute pleasure to come across in the streets and strike up a conversation with. I believe that even the hardiest of the tenants in Possibility had a soft spot for her- whether they showed it or not. Candlelight was the kind of dragon who would put a sparkle in people's eyes wherever she went. So, as you can imagine, it came as quite a surprise to little old me when I heard of her romantic interest in someone who was no less than an alley dweller. Though Possibility is a generally calm and peaceful place, there are dragons who have run there to hide or because they have nowhere else to go, and the young male Nightwing who had caught Candlelight's wonder-filled eyes was one of such. His name, I later learned, was Bloodtrail, and he was an orphan that had fled from the Rainwing Rainforest village "in hopes of escaping a life trapped under the talons of lazy frugivores". I myself left my tribe to live here, but to further pursue my career in medicine, which would never have been able to grow with the limited knowledge that the Rainwings possessed- so, I suppose I understood his reasons for running and felt a sense of sympathy, and thus never intervened when I caught him stealing crops from my back garden. What struck me as puzzling, though, was... how had an absolute delight like Candlelight managed to fall for an antisocial thief and scoundrel like Bloodtrail? Maybe he was kinder than he let himself show. Maybe he had as much of a golden heart as Candlelight herself. Or maybe he didn't, and the phrase "opposites attract" had come into play. I may never know, as after about a year or so of flying rumors about what gossipers called "The Bloodlight Affair", the pair of budding lovers both abruptly left Possibility without reason and haven't returned since. I hope they come back some day. Sometimes I see a dragonet happily playing marbles with a group of strangers or chasing butterflies by a river, and I miss the little smiles or waves I would receive as a cheerful Nightwing-Skywing hybrid would pass by my window every second day on her way to the morning market. It was Candlelight who made me appreciate kindness in this world as much as I do now, and it was from that kindness that I made the decision to open my heart again to more than just my close friends. Due to that, as I write this, I can hear the sound of laughter coming from outside my front window, while my grandchildren play together and my son watches on- and I hope that somewhere, out on the other side of the continent, Candlelight and Bloodtrail are living in as much peace as I am.
