The Successful Experiment

Chapter 2

----AN i know this book is going slow at the moment but i will try to keep it entertaining, the next chapter there will be a small time skip. also plz let me know what you guys think. please enjoy :) changes have been made and will continue to be made as i am having help editing ----

I don't know how long we have been running through the forest, I did notice the others have started to slow from exhaustion. Slowing down until we all came to a complete stop, I looked around the area, breathing heavily along with the others. I don't see anything right away, then I notice an outline of a building in the distance.

I look at the others, "I'm going to go take a look at that building, stay here and stay together and remain quiet."

After I made that request, they all huddled close and I began to slowly walk away. My tail swaying slightly behind me, my ears perked up on alert for any danger. It took what felt like forever by the time I finally made it to the building. I stood and looked closely, the walls I noticed are slowly falling apart along with the door hanging halfway off its hinges. I begin to pull the door, carefully opening it. Hesitantly, I begin to walk inside, staying on alert. I looked around noticing abandoned items and trash everywhere, seeing the inside matches the outside, with holes and missing wood.

I walk inside and sigh, 'this will do for shelter I guess' i think to myself.

I remain cautious walking around the building, but also try to be quick as the others are weak and cold standing out there waiting for me to return.

Once I deem it safe enough for us, besides the lack of some of the walls. I walk around sniffing in some spots making sure it's safe from predators, then begin to make my way back by sniffing out the group. I make my way to them, making sure no predators are near that would bring harm to us. On my way to them I spot a bush with little round balls on the leaves, walking closer to it, noticing they are berries.

I sniff them and scrunch my nose, thinking 'They smell bad, no good.'

I know it would be best to pass them up and make my way to the others. When I return to the group, I prepare myself to make an announcement about my discovery.

"I found some place for us to stay, it's not much but it will do. I can lead you to it," I explain.

As I stare at them I notice how frightened, cold and sleepy they all are. I try to keep my fear at bay to not worry them and help reassure myself. Once they all nod I lead them back to the building. When we arrive, they hesitate to enter. I go ahead of them and tell them it's safe enough, they begin to trickle in. Fang is the last one to enter. They all begin to slowly look around the building, suddenly four arms wrap around me and I look down seeing the two younger kids, I wrap my tail around their shivering form and sigh.

"We will find your family, I promise it." I say with a reassuring smile.

They nod and I sit down, pulling them close. Fang lays at the door we came through. I'm assuming to keep watch.

Out of nowhere, I hear one of the older kids say. "I FOUND FOOD!"

I look at them and motion for him to bring it to me, once he hands me the food, I see it's actually two apples. I smile a little and sniff it, I think of how lucky we are that there are, they smell good. I'm not sure how but it doesn't matter, we need it. I let my claws grow out and I began to slice them up into pieces for each of us. I know it will be hard as there are at least 15 of us so i try to make even slices. I hand them out and keep the smallest one for myself. Once we have something small to eat, the kids curl around us. I lay down and pull the two young ones to me, I smile at them and nuzzle them softly. I then remember I don't know their names.

"Apologize for not asking earlier, but what are your names?"

The boy looks up and smiles "I'm Zack and this is my sister Lilly"

Zack has nice but dirty short blond hair with gray eyes. Lilly has strawberry blond hair and blue eyes.

I smile looking at them "they call me subject 327 happy I could get you two out of there"

I then close my eyes, telling them softly to try to get some rest. They nod and cuddle closer to me, to which I hold them close with my tail wrapped around us for warmth. I'm not sure how we will survive, especially in the cold like this, but I am determined to keep us alive and find our way back to our family's. I'm not sure if we will be accepted back with how we are now, but I have to hope they accept us with open arms. With that thought in mind, I slowly fall asleep.
