Remembering the date

"What the hell is the date?" Merlin muttered. He stared at the paperwork he was signing and had become suddenly frustrated by the final signature that he also had to date as he'd forgotten it. He'd never worried that much about it until the 1800's. After that it seemed everyone was trying to set dates in history. He'd already been over a thousand years old by then. Honestly, you spend enough time not keeping track of the days, it's hard to adjust and adapt to people wanting to date every single thing. Like, everything, everything. He used to pick up a morning paper and carry it around so he wouldn't forget it when someone would ask. Here he was, in the year 2006, and he couldn't figure out how to remember the dates anymore. He barely remembered the day of the week. Every day just felt the same to him anymore. Wake up, coffee, work from his home office (which was really just a desk in a corner that was less messy than the rest of his flat), maybe get take-away, maybe go grab a bite somewhere. He was an immortal warlock who couldn't remember the date to put on his damn paperwork.

"It's March 20th." a voice said from behind him. He was startled, and glanced behind him.

"Thanks. I, uh, hadn't realized I said that out loud." Merlin apologized and hurriedly wrote the date down.

"No worries. I barely remember the day of the week. I use my mobile to remind me of the date when needed. Do you not have one?" The young blond woman asked. She was really quite pretty and seemed friendly enough. Merlin shrugged a bit embarrassed.

"I keep leaving it places. I spent so long not having one, that it's hard to get in the habit of carrying it with me everywhere."

"Makes sense. I've got to keep mine on me or my mum would flip. Keeps her at ease knowing she can reach me when I'm off...travelling." She said hesitantly.

"Well, thank you again. I'm Merlin, by the way." He said and reached out to shake her hand.

"Rose. It was nice meeting you Merlin." She said. A man in a pinstripe-type suit, with converse shoes, and a long coat had come up to her just then. He smiled at Merlin when he came over.

"Rose, looks like you've made a new friend. Hello, I'm The Doctor."

"Merlin. Nice to meet you. Well, I better get on. Thanks again for your help, Rose. Maybe I'll see you around." Merlin nodded at them and then looked at the man with the strange name. "Doctor." He turned and went to finish going over his documents that he was filling out for yet another bank account for another era. He couldn't help but smile though. He never thought he'd meet The Doctor. Of course he'd heard of him, and seen him in various forms throughout the ages, but he didn't think the man remembered him. He wondered if he ever had trouble remembering the date. Merlin made a mental note to start keeping him mobile on him at all times.
