You're probably wondering why the title is so weird. I didn't wanna make a spoiler title that's why. This chapter will contain spoilers to the Shibuya arc so read at your own discretion. I'm the type of author that likes to write shit for comforting readers, but also comfort my characters because I just wanna hug them sometimes.

Just a bit of depressed Maki.

Maki stared at her reflection in the mirror. She ran a hand through her shortened hair, black locks that haven't been this short since she was six. The ends were as split as they were three years ago. And after they were almost as curly as Mai's.

She remembered waking up with Shoko hovering above her. Her eye bags were darker than usual, sleeves rolled as she wiped the sweat from her forehead. Before she even opened her mouth, Maki already knew.

She faintly remembered falling in shock, the last thing she screamed was Nanami's name. When she was touched with the same flames she didn't have time to scream. She didn't know why she couldn't move. She could smell the burning of flesh, the stench of her hair before blacking out.

Now that she thinks about it she could still smell the burnt crisps of her hair. But she was alive.

She moved her hand past her short locks to her right eye, which wasn't there anymore. She lifted the eye patch she had grown to wear for three years now. She remembered when she started wearing it. She remembered everyone's reactions too.

"You're looking great Maki!"

"Yeah beautiful as ever."

Beautiful. That was the adjective they had used that day. If it were any other word maybe she would've agreed. Perhaps if Gojo-sensei was there to lighten the mood she'd have believed them. But even he wasn't there.

She looked at the scared skin, patches like they were melting off her. Her left eye wasn't any better, but she couldn't see out of it. She glanced her black eyes at her also marred hand. Most of her upper body suffered burns.

Her body. A perfect attestment to the years of hard work and and sweat she had poured to attain it. Every part of her had a layer of muscle. But she wondered if people could actually look past the sizable scar tissues to notice her hard work.

Her thoughts were stopped with a knock on the door.

"Maki? You good? You've been in there for awhile," the concerned voice of her lover asked. Maki still wonders how she had come to have herself call you that. Something so...domestic. Neither of you were surely that.

"Yeah," she said. She snapped the eye patch back over her eyes, most of her bangs covering it. She snapped her wrist and buttoned her cape over her shoulders. When she opened the door she gave you an unimpressed look. "You don't have to treat me like a child you know."

"C'mon, everyone's waiting for us," you clasped a hand over her wrist, pulling her with you.

The truth was she actually welcomed your presence. Not so much your worrying, but she acknowledged that you cared for her. She appreciated you.

Maki wasn't a shy person. She spoke what she thought, and was rather blunt about it. But she was reserved. There were some days where she'd just stand by and watch her friends laugh and talk, choosing to only watch the moment as a viewer instead of a participant. This was one of those days.

She watched as you seamlessly blended in with the group, your face emanating the same aura as the others.

They had smiles on their faces while she merely frowned. They'd open their eyes to look everyone in the eye. She'd look away. They laughed while they'd slap the other on the back. She'd only crossed her arms. They were...

Beautiful.

While she was scarred.

Emotionally. Physically. Perpetually scarred. Might as well add broken to the list.

Stop it. You're Zenin Maki. You're going to be clan head. She had no time for such thoughts. She could only push forward. So why...?

She was sitting alone on the rooftop of the college when you finally found her. She was twirling a knife in her hand, her mind completely lost to her thoughts, which was an odd thing for Maki. Mai was the studious one out of the both of them.

She always said my hair was straighter than hers...I guess we're the same now.

Maki was so lost in her thoughts she didn't feel your presence until your shadow came into view

Maki was so lost in her thoughts she didn't feel your presence until your shadow came into view. "I thought you were with the others?"

"How could I be with them when you obviously need me?" You said as you took a seat next to her. Maki shot you a look.

You sighed. A poor choice of words on your part. Maki hated depending on people. You had been the few people she'd let close. Perhaps this was one of the only childish things about her still. Her refusal to let people in.

"There's something clouding those beautiful black eyes of yours. And I won't know unless you tell me," you tried again.

You raised an arm to lay a hand over hers, which were positioned over her knees. You took the gloved hands in your own and held it up to your chest. You clasped it, kissing it once, before slowly taking the glove off. Maki only glared at the entwined hands.

"What? Are you gonna tell me you hate my advances now?" you knew she loved your affection.

"...no. It's just," you stayed silent, coaxing her to finish her sentence. "Doesn't it disgust you?"

"Your hand? No, why would it?" In retaliation you raised it to your lips again, peppering it wit physical forms of your affection. "I was wondering you always kept it gloved up. I prefer holding your real skin than some leather."

At this statement Maki laughed. "That's scarred skin, Y/N. Damaged. Broken. Whatever. You can't tell me it's an unsightly thing to look at all day," at this Maki turned away to look at the sun.

You on the other hand scoffed, going as far as pulling her hand and her body to topple into yours. And Zenin Maki was always big spoon. "No. This is your skin that I happen to love very much. I know you didn't get good grades in school but still," it was your turn to roll your eyes. "Stop being stupid."

Maki was silent at this, just blinking, taking in your words, and soaking in your smell that had come to smell like home. When had it start smelling like home? "I–"

"If it's something negative about yourself then I don't want to hear it," you pouted in retaliation. "The Maki that's my girlfriend is the prettiest fucking person I know and no one gets to say otherwise."

"Even if it's me?" I mean like, she was Maki.

"Even if it's you. Especially you," the statement came out more softly than Y/N had anticipated. "I love you."

"Whatever," Maki sighed. But after a few minutes she took it back. "I do too."
