It had been two weeks and you had not seen Christopher. He seemed to have fallen back into his old cycle of sadness over Marrian which made you also sad.
Another week went by and you went out onto the commons, half hoping to see Obsidian and her beautiful rider again. It saddened you that you didn't run into him like you did those three weeks ago. It made your life dull, knowing that the only person who seemed to like you was full of sadness.
It was a surprise therefore that you saw Christopher sitting by a lake with a fishing rod in his hand a couple of days later. He seemed peaceful, the water calm and the wind gentle. Next to him laid a small hunting dog who watched the water lazily. Christopher looked up at you and rubbed his chin slightly, unsure what to do. He has been withdrawn for the past three weeks questioning if this feeling he had for you. He didn't his heart to be broken again, it had been smashed three times already and he didn't feel safe letting it go, not yet.
"Colonel" you greeted him.
"(y/n) what a pleasant surprise" he said.
"Indeed" you said.
"Please, sit with me" he said.
"Of course" you said, getting down from your horse and sitting on the grass.
"What are you fishing for?" you asked.
"Well I hope for a carp but I will not place my bets just yet" he said. "This is Charles" he said, placing his hand on the dog's head.
"Nice to meet you Charles" you cooed at the dog. It gave you a lick and lifted it's head up, enjoying the attention.
You sat in silence, watching the lake and the ducks which floated on it.
"It is a nice day" you remarked, unsure what to say.
"Yes" he answered. "A day for fishing". You noticed that the colonel looked very reflective and sad, like he was thinking very deeply about something. You decided to leave him to think and instead patted the dog who relaxed his head onto the grass.
Christopher looked at you, his hat low on his head. He loved how gentle you were to his dog and to his horse, they both seemed to take to you immediately and so did he. However Christopher was unsure what to do, does he allow these feelings to consume him? He knew he fell in love too quickly, it happened with Marrianne and that broke him.
He was pushed out of his thoughts with a tug on the fishing line, he had caught something. Christopher quickly pulled back and out of the water came a little fish on the end of the hook.
"A small carp" he said, taking it off the hook and placing it down in a small basket. "I think I have enough"
"For what?" you asked.
"Lunch" he said. "It is Sunday and the cook doesn't work on Sundays so I make my own meals." he grasped the basket and you looked into it, seeing around four varying sizes of fish.
"Are you eating alone?" you asked, hesitant at his answer.
"I am" he said, looking down at the grass. "I must get used to not having company now while I eat."
You looked at Christopher sadly, you so wanted to ask if you could eat a meal with him but you were too anxious.
"Anyway" he said. "I must go before the fish turn bad" he smiled. "I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
" I hope you do too" you said, waving slightly as he whistled to his dog and walked toward the pathway. You sighed, stroking your horse, you so wanted to eat with him and be his company he wished. It was unfair that you were cursed with your status, you do wish one day you could share a meal with him, as equals. That would never happen. But yet he allowed you to say his name.
You shrugged, having no idea what would happen next.
