Water cascaded over her body as she broke through the surface of the water, the anomaly far beneath her in the depths of the lake.
She treaded water in the center of the lake, her eyes scanned the tree line in search of land. She swam over to the beach and coughed, her body spasming as she exhaled shaky breaths.
She was dripping wet, and her clothes clung tight to her body, presenting its shape. She heard a rustling in front of her and peeked up to see a girl of about her age standing over her.
Her eyes were wide with confusion. Her hair was cut short and she had tattoos along her face.
"Where's Aunty O?" She questioned cautiously. The girl narrowed her eyes and let your mouth hang open. Taking a shaky breath, she breathed, "who the hell is that?"
————————————————————————
Sleep was over. Melvi gasped heavily as she sat bolt upright in the makeshift bed, slamming her head with the slanted roof of the hut.
She winced and rubbed at her forehead. Across the cabin, a woman chuckled. Melvi looked around until she located the girl, who was sitting at a rectangular wooden table, folding something over in her hands.
"Shut up, Hope," she said, a hint of a joke in her tone. Hope smiled broadly and returned her lighthearted tone. "You expect me to not laugh when you smack your head? Maybe if it was a one time thing, but you do it every day," she prodded, poking her friend from across the table.
Melvi at first recoiled from the touch, but then relaxed her stance and sat down across from Hope.
Thé girl was fixated on something in her hand. The girls made eye contact, and within seconds, Melvi had snatched the item from the other girl's hand.
Hope groaned and held out her hand expectantly. She eyed Melvi. "Give it back, Mel," Hope said irritatedly.
Melvi teased, "not yet," and inspected the item. It was a small bottle, and inside said bottle, there was a crumpled up piece of paper. Melvi reached in and grabbed it, as Hope exasperatedly fell back against her chair and folded her arms across her chest defiantly.
"I've already read it a dozen times," she said, keeping an eye on Melvi, who was trying, and failing, to unfold the letter. Hope testily reached across the table to grab it back. As she did so, their hands brushed against each other, causing Melvi to go rigid.
Hope pretended not to notice and shoved the paper back in the bottle. Hope got up to put it somewhere safe, and Melvi snuck a glance at her back; her muscled shoulders were exposed in her tank top, and the pants she was wearing fit snugly around her upper thighs.
Melvi quickly averted her gaze and spoke. "What was that?" She inquired. Hope shrugged as she walked back to lean over her chair. She propped her forearms against the back of her seat and shrugged with her hands. "Just a letter from Aunty O. I found it in the backyard."
Melvi nodded. She didn't know what to say. She had been here with Hope for over two years, yet Octavia hadn't come back. Who knew how long it would be until Melvi saw any of her friends again.
She told Hope stories about Clarke and Bellamy and the rest of them, since Hope had only ever known Diyoza and Octavia. And Dev, but that was it.
Hope seemed to sense the conversation was over and strode over past Melvi, to the door. On her way out, she patted Melvi on the shoulder, a little roughly. Rougher than normal.
"Time for training," she said definitively. Melvi rolled her eyes and reluctantly got up and followed Hope outside.
They had trained every day for hours. Melvi had grown up as part of Shallow Valley Kru, and Hope had been taught by a resident of Bardo. Needless to say, both of them were insanely skilled and didn't need the extra practice, yet Hope insisted they train anyway.
Melvi shut the door behind her and took her place in front of Hope in the grass. They had fought in the same clearing for two years without fail. A change of scenery would've been nice.
Hope struck first, aiming for Melvi's left cheekbone. Melvi dodged this and pinned Hope's wrists behind her back. "Same move every time," Melvi cooed. Hope struggled against her and muttered, "at least it gives me good results."
Melvi was kicked back and with tremendous force, landing hard on the ground. She winced as she tried to stand; her shoulder throbbed where it crashed into the ground. It had taken the brunt of the force and had absorbed the shock meant for her entire body.
Hope cracked her neck both ways before motioning for Melvi to "bring it on."
Melvi charged at the girl and knocked her backward with a thump. Once on the ground, Melvi snatched Hope's hands and pinned her wrists above her head, and straddled her midsection, which kept her from getting up.
"Alright," came the voice of a breathless Hope, "you win." Melvi smirked and leaned close to Hope's face, trying to catch her breath.
A moment passed between the two as Hope stared intensely into Melvi's eyes. Their noses were inches apart, and Melvi felt herself leaning closer to Hope's lips, as if the gravitational pull had been rotated off its axis and was pushing her down onto the other girl.
Hope's eyes flicked from Melvi's eyes, back to her lips, back to her eyes as she mumbled unsuredly, "maybe I should've gone for the waist-"
Hope's eyes widened slightly as Melvi's lips collided with hers feverishly. The girl sank into the kiss as her hands stayed pinned above her head, unable to move, but she found, she was not entirely mad about that.
Melvi's hair had slipped out of her braid and tickled Hope's cheekbone as she molded her body onto Hope's. Meanwhile, Melvi released the girl's hands from above her head and used her own to grasp Hope's face.
Hope brought her hands down to Melvi's hips and around to grip the backs of her hamstrings. Melvi made a small noise but continued to kiss the girl passionately.
Hope finally, reluctantly, pushed Melvi off of her and sat up. Melvi looked slightly hurt, which broke Hope inside, but she quickly explained.
"Mel, believe me, I would do this all day with you, but I think we should take it inside."
Melvi's face lit up at the news. She grabbed Hope's shirt and brought their lips together again as Hope brought a hand up to Melvi's chest.
"Mm-ok," Melvi breathed, muttering against Hope's lips. "What do you... plan on doing?" She asked through feverish, hot kisses. Hope smirked against Melvi's lips as she answered the question. "You."
