Maybe the worst part about being Commander was the constant questions. Foolish, arrogant civilians thinking they can stumble into Polis and simply climb up to my quarters without invitation for the sole purpose of wasting my time.

Countless questions were actually of importance, I will admit, but the ones who bothered me just to ask if a smuggler from outside our borders should be in prison were just irritating. The obvious answer floated about the room while I waited for their stupidity to be over.

Before me stood a tall man, face scarred from the creatures and people outside of our borders. He stood dumbly in the doorway, with enough idiocy to make me completely lose it on his ignorant figure.

"Speak!" I roared. "Do you think a smuggler who stole from us should be left free, or should spend time in the pit?"

His eyes widened and he shook his head vigorously, a sign that he had no clue what to say.

I growled under my breath and stormed over to him. He started to back away, but I caught him by the shirt and yanked him closer so my breath tickled his cheek.

"She will go to the pits. And-" I jerked him back into place when he started to move away,"- foolish questions like this will not be tolerated in the future. You know as well as anyone else here that we do not tolerate smugglers. This is your last warning." I hissed the last sentence at him and shoved him out of the room.

Once he nearly ran for the ground, I turned my back and sighed. Really, they couldn't handle anything by themselves. Being Commander was difficult. Sure, I lived, but with a price.

Deciding against my better judgement, I stalked out of the tower and descended. Meeting the smuggler might intimidate her. Might get her to tell me why she thought it was intelligent to steal from my city, ravage my town and ransack my tower.

She was nothing more than a thief.

As I crossed the city to the pits, I noticed there weren't any guards watching the door, even from far away. The pits were located on the edge of the woods, and far behind the merchant stalls and bustling center of the town.

They were out of the way, hidden, so no one would accidentally stumble upon the criminals.

I stopped just short of the door; it was jangling furiously back and forth. I smirked and crossed so I could lean overtop of the door and peer down into the pit.

Sure enough, at the top, was a girl sawing determinedly at the door. She was no more than seventeen, and she looked at me with startled, scared eyes.

I wasn't wearing my traditional Commander clothes, only a pair of black leather pants, torn up boots, and a tight jacket.

She must've thought I was just some average warrior, because she relaxed upon seeing my outfit.

"How's it coming along?" I asked casually, careful not to let her hear the anger that was already boiling up inside me.

She pondered whether to speak for a moment as she looked into my deep, blue eyes. She answered distastefully, "what do you think?"

I fought to keep the anger down. I could feel my lips curling into a rabid sneer, so I bent my head down as I knelt down next to the door.
