Chapter 19: Rekindled Love

Nia

“Why this song?” I asked John. John had written me down to sing some I didn’t know. “John I don’t know this song.” He frowns, “You don’t. Damnit, pick your own song.” He erases the song and leaves me to pick one.

I think for a second until I finally write one down, smiling at my song choice I go back to working. It was happy hour, so there were loads of people. The singing didn’t start until later, so I had enough time to prepare. I was going to leave and come back around six. While I was singing John had to work both of our shifts. He was a little salty towards me when he realized he lost the bet.

“Don’t pout.” I tease him.

He rolls his eyes at me. “If I knew your little ass could sing, I would’ve never bet you.”

I smirk, “Mmhh, Okay sore loser.” I take out my notepad and go up to a table of young teens. They looked around sixteen or seventeen and it was two guys and two girls. “What can I get you guys?” I asked, smiling. Everyone ordered water, and I write it down.

I go to John to whip me up those waters. He fills four cups and hands them to me on a platter. I carry it back to the group’s table. Handing them out, they thank me.

“Hey guys, sorry for being late.” A girl moves around me and sits at an empty chair with them. She was a black girl, nice wavy hair and a nose piercing. They greet her and she looks at me.

“I made it just in time for drinks. Can I get your mango tea please?” I smile at her and write down her order.

One of the guys scooted closer to her and put their arm around her. The guy was cute in a boyish way. He had slicked back blonde hair and a rich kid look. She smiled at him and he gave her a loving look.

Oh how I remember giving my own boyfriend that look two years ago.

They look at me and I give them another smile before getting her drink.

I lean on the counter top next to John. “Whats wrong Carrie Underwood?” I laugh, “Really?” he nods, “It’s the only American singer I could think off the top of my head.”

I shake my head, “Anyway, I just don’t know what to do about Aiden. I’m tired of the little meetings we have, I just wish things would be normal. But I also don’t want to overstep anything, he just had something happen to him and I just want to be there to comfort him. But what we’re doing now is just boring,”

“I want it how it used to be and how he and I could do something random and still have the best time of our lives. I want it to be like when he could tell me something stupid and I would roll my eyes, and he would tease me about being mean. I want the old Aiden back. The one I fell in love with.” I said.

John pats my back, “I’m not therapist love, but think, maybe you need to stop acting so fragile around him and just treat him the same. Stop walking on eggshells  and maybe he’ll loosen up. Do something for him and not just because you think it will please him. Do something that will rekindle that friendship and love you guys had.”

I raise my hand up and look at John. “You’re a fucking genies.” I smiled wide. John laughed, “I know right.”

I was glad that it was almost time for me to leave, because when I served my last customer for the day, I dashed out the door and ran to my car. I had an idea, and I hoped it worked. Driving home, jamming to the music in my car, I sing loud and dance in my seat. Turning into the campus parking lot I cut the music off and unplug my aux cord. Humming the song, I happily go inside. Everyone was watching me as I came in.
