as the night went on, everyone was sobering up around three in the morning. laughter echoed through the room, mingling with the soft murmur of the conversation as the group relished in each other's company.
haneul couldn't help but notice the ease with which jeongha conversed with Jeno, her words flowing effortlessly without the usual stumbling that happened when she was sober. the subtle shift didn't go unnoticed by others, prompting haneul to lean in to aera, her curiosity piqued.
"what do you think they did in the closet?" she whispered, gesturing discreetly towards jeno and jeongha, who seemed to be giggling at one of mark's jokes.
or maybe they were just laughing at him. whatever, it didn't matter.
the point was, they were laughing...together.
and even though haneul would have loved to gossip about her best friend's love life with her other best friend, their attention was diverted by the unfolding drama between renjun and donghyuck, who had escalated their playful banter into a mock confrontation.
"what did who do now?" aera asked to no one in particular.
jisung came running down the stairs in an attempt to pull renjun away from donghyuck. "so we were playing a game and donghyuck kept on provoking renjun so eventually renjun grabbed a plastic knife. they're playing hide and seek tag now," he explained.
as donghyuck rushed down the stairs and snatched aera as his shield, he yelled out, "you won't hurt aera because i know at least five people in this room that would hurt you back!"
renjun faltered, confronted with the united front of jisung, haneul, jeongha, jaemin, and donghyuck himself. desperate, he resorted to offering Aera a week's worth of boba, hoping to sway her favor.
"aera please," renjun begged, practically getting down on his knees. "i'll buy you boba for a week, all on me, however many times you want in that week."
the man was desperate.
but jeno could be heard whining from somewhere on the side. "but she's my boba buddy," he pouted, having jeongha rub his shoulder in comfort.
of course, no one was being serious, but it was all for humor.
however, jeno put his hands up when renjun pointed the plastic knife at him and glared, silently telling him to quiet down.
but aera didn't want to make things easy for renjun or donghyuck, just to see how the whole thing would pan out. so she quickly ran away from donghyuck, leaving him unguarded, and to jaemin, all while giggling like a little five year old.
donghyuck looked at aera with genuine hurt and disappointment on his face from her betrayal.
"boba tops everything," she told him as she narrowed her eyes. "right jaemin?"
jaemin, however, was entranced, his attention captured by aera's proximity. he was frozen. he felt his breathing hitch as her fingers lightly clung to his shirt, her sparkling eyes waiting for his answer.
"boba is everything, right?" she asked again.
he grew out of his trance when he felt tugging, realizing it that it was aera wanting to get his attention. he nodded, unable to to find himself able to say anything, but only one thought was running through his mind.
no, it's you. you're everything.
