“BREAKFAST!” I call out through the open window. Luke and Liam were outside doing who knows what. April had just finished frying deer meat and I had finished the fruit slicing.
“What should I get to dr-“
“HELLO!” Liam came bounding inside the kitchen. His shirt had stuck to his body from the sweat, and his sword shined bright in the sunlight. Luke came in not to long after, but he looked even more tired than Liam.
“Breakfast already?” he said. “It’s only a quarter to six!” Luke looked tired and sore, but hes eating one way or another. I have to make him.
“I’ll be right back, I have to go wash my hands.” I say and walk out of the room to the garden. There was a little backwater creek flowing into the forest, so I just dip my hands in and they come out perfectly clean.
I stride back into the kitchen, hoping to have first pick at the deer, but I see an empty table.
“Guys?!” I exclaim, “Where did everything go?”
April came in slowly.
“That’s why I never wash my hands after calling them. Come back and everythings gone.” She says with a sympathetic smile on her face.
“Everythings gone? I didn’t have anything!” I say shocked.
“Don’t worry; we have a few apples you can have. We might even go gathering today for more food.” She hands me two apples, ripe and ready. I slowly munch on them as I watch Liam trying to teach Luke how to hunt.
So far it was getting better. Luke had his sword in his hand practicing his form. I wish I could do something. All a girl could do was cook and gather, but not fight or hunt. Maybe I could, I just haven’t tried yet. Who knows?
I throw my apple out the window, a nice fertilizer. I guess it would help the soil, since its natural and all that. At least, that’s what April told me.
Then Luke looks at me through the glass. His bright green eyes shine like emeralds in the sunlight. He motioned me to come, so I put my shoes on and ran outside.
“Hey, guess what?” he askes.
“What” I respond.
“All four of us are going hunting and gathering, so go get ready.” And with that h pushed me gently in the direction of the mini house.
“Okay, hey April can I borrow some of your clothes?” She nods her head in agreement, and I dash into the house. This is exactly what I have been waiting for. I open her drawers, and find some pretty nice clothes, but I need hunting clothes, not party clothes.
I pick out a Navy Blue skin tight t- shirt, denim jeans, and my black converse. I tie my hair into a braid, and confidently walk outside, where the others were waiting.
“Here, this is the plant and fruit sack. You and April will gather, and me and Luke will hunt.” Liam explaines. It seems okay with me, since I can get out into the forest. I gladly take the sack and join April at the creek.
“Ready?” she askes.
“Always” I reply.
“How about this one? Isn’t this mint?” I ask, carefully examining a plant with a minty smell. April turns around to look at the plant then nods. I pick it and put it into the sack. Apparently, April has sewn little pockets inside it, so each plant or fruit has a specific pocket.
I pick most of the mint, leaving a few behind, so other mint can grow. When I am done with that patch, the mint pocket is almost full.
I get up, just as an arrow flies past my head, sticking into a tree. I hear a boy whispering something to another person; Luke.
“WAIT! Its me!” I scream out ducking down.
“Madison? Are you okay?” I hear Liam ask. He was running up to me and April, his arrow back in the quiver.
“Yes.” Is the only thing I can manage to say. I was shocked. Liam patted me on the head gently, his way of saying sorry.
“Lets stay together so that doesn’t happen again.” April suggests and we all agree.
We roam around the forest, collecting food and drink as we go. Liam was telling a story of when he and April were little, how they played in the woods all day, and camped out all night. He had just finshed when I saw something in the distance.
“Liam, what’s that?” I ask him curiously.
He stares in my direction and his eyes widen. They have terror written all over them. He readys his bow, aiming at the creature. It was black, with slender arms and legs, red eyes, and a reddd wide mouth filled with hundreds of razor sharp teeth.
“Luke, get your sword out, now!” Liam demands. “Ladies, go home now.”
“Liam, whats out there?” April askes, backing away slowly.
“No time for questions, just go home.” He says more firmly.
“But-“
“Now!” he demands.
Me and April dash through the trees, trying to get home.
“What was that?” I ask as we run.
“I dunno, well look when we get home!” she yells back.
As soon as we get there, we dive for the door, and lock it shut behind us. I lean against the nearest wall, gasping for breath. April is looking around the bookshelf, trying to find something. When she finds it she slams it onto the table.
It was a large book, and it had the old book smell. I flipped through the pages. It had intricate drawings of animals and under the picture the name. on the next page it had neat printing on it, telling more about it. I flip through, but stop when I land on a picture of the creature we saw.
Underneath the picture it had the name “GERNIAL” in big black letters. It read,
GERNIAL
This beast was made from the ashes of hell itself. Formed by the thick ashes of a volcano, and the heavy flames that form its heart, it can’t love or be loved. Usually hostile, it would eat anything it comes across, even its own kind. With two rows of razor blade teeth (two hundred in each) it has enough power to slice a man to shreds. It’s main form of defense is it’s strength, which is equivalent to a 2 ton auto vehicle.
