Chapter 24

The reclamation of the wasteland took them about ten days, during which time the majority of them worked very hard. However, one or two workers were discovered to be either too lazy or cheating. As a result, Xu Ran paid them as agreed and then fired them after telling them that they would never work again. Only when such workers got their final pay did they realize how regretful they were, but there was no way out already. Obviously, Xu Ran walked the walk. (Walked the walk: to do the things that one says one will do, This means that Xu Ran did exactly what he said in the previous chapter.)

In the end, the outcomes of the three groups were almost identical. Two of the groups were the fastest, while the third was just slightly slower. As a result, Xu Ran chose to put the two groups in first place, with the other group in second. Many of the workers in the three groups were rewarded in this way, which made them all very happy. They all promised that if Xu Ran needed them in the future, they would never refuse.

Indeed, Xu Ran had gained instant popularity as well as widespread support at this time.

Except for Xu Ran's eldest and third uncles, who came the next day to torment them, no one from the Xu family, including his father and daddy, ever came. This made Xu Ran feel strange. He did not assume, however, that the Xu Family's attitude would shift. He was convinced that there was something else in store for him.

The Xu family had their own version of wishful thinking. They had intended to immediately begin farming on the land after Xu Ran had opened it up. They believed Xu Ran was their son, and that he should share the land with his dad and daddy.

Elder Daddy Xu was the one who proposed this plan. Xu Houcai was originally opposed to it. When he recalled the last time Xu Ran stood by and watched his eldest and third brothers bully them, he despised Xu Ran's guts. He considered Xu Ran to be a cruel and ungrateful person. (shocking to the bones :O )

After some consideration, the family agreed that the plan would succeed, so they all waited patiently at home this time.

Xu Ran intended to increase the amount of wheat and potatoes he grew, as well as garlic and radish. He also intended to employ wheat-growing workers. As for potatoes, he would prefer to ask Wu Mei's and the other two families for help. He knew these families would not plant potatoes right now because they didn't know how the harvest would turn out.  If the crop was planted more while the harvest was less, it would be terrible because it was not enough to feed the whole family.

Xu Ran intended to plant a large quantities of potatoes in the village, but he needed to have a test first. This could be considered as his contribution to the village!

First and foremost, he wanted to purchase wheat seeds because they were unavailable at home. The villagers didn't leave much, either, just enough for their own use. As a result, Xu Ran was forced to purchase them in the town. He remembered the corn he had seen before and decided that this time he could buy some along the way. So he could buy corn and wheat seeds together in the same shop.

He went to town by himself this time. Liu Tong was too preoccupied with making clothes at home to join him. Because of their family's land opening up event, the two kids became acquainted with other children in the village, and they joined the large group of playmates in the village. They were practically not at home every day, aside from learning, feeding, and sleeping.

Seeing the two children's happiness, Xu Ran and Liu Tong were happy and left them alone. Aside from the kites they already had, Xu Ran also purchased a variety of toys for them.

It just so happened that more chili paste had just been made. Xu Ran and Liu Tong got up early that morning and prepared the chili paste, after which Xu Ran went to the town to deliver the paste.
