you were sitting on your porch step, doing homework when you hear hard footsteps against the concrete and heavy breathing. "y/n." pete breathes out. you look up and give him a confused look. pete was your best friend but a little more. you guys acted like a couple and did couple stuff but never really made it official but you were kinda okay with that.
"did you run here?" you ask, knowing it was about a 30 minute walk. "yes." he sighs. "i need to talk to you." he says and sits next to you. "are you sure you still want to go to OSU?" you laugh, thinking he was joking but he stays silent, waiting for your response. "pete, yes. i got a full ride. do you know how uncommon that is?" he frowns slightly. "but look at what you'd be missing! imagine moving from New York to Ohio." he says and stands back up. "it's temporary. and i'll be back on vacations and holidays." you tell him. he sighs. "i don't want you to leave."
"then come with me." you tell him and he laughs. "y/n i barely have a 2.0 gpa." he tells you and you shrug. "if you want to see me then you better work your ass off and come with me. because i'm not missing out on an opportunity like that." he nods slightly. "fine, i will then. but i need your help." he says honestly. "i'm fine with helping you, pete." he smiles and kisses your cheek. "i'll see you tomorrow!" he yells and starts running back home.
the next day pete sets his text books next to you at the library and opens them and immediately starts taking notes and filling out sheets. "pete-" he quickly hushes you. "i'm doing homework." he says and you roll your eyes and laugh, putting in your headphones and continue to work on your essay.
next period was science and you shared that same class with pete. "okay, everyone. as i've been telling you guys this past week, we're finally starting our project. so pair up and start discussing ideas." pete runs up to you and sits down across from you at the small table. "partners?" he asks and you nod. "of course you smile." pete takes out his notebook and begins telling you ideas he's been thinking about. and even though it's only been a day you're super proud of him for finally getting his stuff together.
a couple weeks later pete comes to you with his report card. "y/n!" he yells and you look at the paper. All A's except for one B and a C in math. "pete you're doing fantastic!" you tell him and hug him and he hugs you back tightly. he slightly pulls away but makes eye contact with you. he leans in slightly and kisses you, grabbing your face and deepening the kiss. when you both pull back you're slightly out of air and take light breaths. "i've got to get back home and keep working on bringing my grades up." he says and starts walking back home from school. you don't really understand why he doesn't just ask you out, you would like to tell people that pete's yours but pete always introduces you as just a friend. which honestly makes you mad.

~ two weeks before graduation~

"pete have you even applied yet?" you ask, starting to get frustrated with him. "listen, don't worry about me. i got this." he says and you sigh. "whatever. it doesn't even matter. i'm not sure why i'm so concerned about you getting in." you get up from the lunch table and go sit with your other friends. lately you feel like pete hasn't been taking things as seriously as he should and he started to slack from what you could see. pete doesn't bother to get up. he just stays in the same spot he was in and just silently eats his lunch.
you and pete haven't been talking that much lately and you both were starting to distance yourselves. you didn't want to leave him behind but you also needed to do this to make sure you have a great future.

                                   ~graduation~

you walk across the stage, hearing your parents cheer you on and everyone else was clapping. you look down at the audience and see pete's seat empty. you didn't think he ended up graduating and you frowned, knowing he wasn't going to be going to ohio with you.
after the ceremony your family pulls you into hugs and hands you small gifts and flowers. you still look around for pete for some odd reason and when you couldn't find him you just sigh and continue talking to your family.
when you get home you see flowers sitting on the porch and a small note taped to them. "congratulations, babe. you did it. sorry i couldn't make it, i had to do some things today. hope it was amazing and i wish i could've been by your side." ~pete

                   ~ a couple weeks after graduation ~

it was time for you to board your plane and you haven't heard anything from pete since that note he left for you at your front porch. you really wanted to know how he was doing and you blew his phone up all the time and he never responded. you were currently sitting in the small waiting room area, waiting to board your plane. you text pete once again telling him that you'll miss him and that's when someone sits next to you and you look up. it was pete! you gasp and give him a hug and he hugs back. "what are you doing here!?" you practically yell, having a couple people look your way. "i got in." he smiles. your eyes go wide. "seriously? why didn't you tell me earlier?" you ask him and he shrugs.i wanted it to be a surprise. i mean, it's not a full ride but i just got accepted." you smile. "that's amazing! but why ghost me completely?" you ask him. "i feel like i would've slipped up and said something about it to be honest." you nod slowly and you kiss him softly and he kisses back. "oh that reminds me." he says with a light chuckle. "do you want to be my girlfriend, maybe?" he asks and you roll your eyes. "it's about time you asked." you say with a smile.
