Everything felt cold. So cold. The dark unconsciousness felt heavy. I was slowly coming too out of the haze. The room was so cold. I was so cold. I tried to remember something. Anything. My head throbbed as I searched my mind for any memory I could find. I gasped for air as my body jolted upwards. My eyes flew open when the last memory came back to me.
Cold, evil, dead eyes staring at me asking me about my friend before someone knocked me out from behind.
I felt my panic rise. This must be where they brought me. I started looking around frantically for any sign of where I was. The place looked normal enough. It was like a bedroom or maybe a makeshift hospital room. I pushed the fear inside me down managing to pull myself to my feet. I felt stiff like I hadn't used my legs in a long time. How long did these guys have me knocked out?
The door to the room suddenly opened. I threw myself into the corner praying who ever it was wouldn't harm me. A young woman about my age stepped quietly inside the room closing the door behind her. She was in a typical nurse's dress but something seemed different. I couldn't pin point exactly what it was. She smiled sweetly at me then gestured for me to sit on the bed. For some reason I felt I could trust her.
"How are you feeling?" She asked with a soft voice.
"I'm okay I guess." I answered quietly.
She silently looked me over. I wasn't sure what on earth she could be checking for.
"I'm sorry but what on earth is going on?" I asked grabbing her hand to get her attention.
"It's not my place to tell you that Miss Roffe." She gave me a small smile then stepped back towards the door.
"Well can I talk to someone who will tell me?" I asked a little harsher.
She nodded then quickly left me alone once again. I stood back up walking over to the window. Why does this feel wrong? This isn't Brooklyn. I know that much. Where am I?
The door opened again to a large black man with an eye patch and a mean looking expression. This isn't going to be good. He looked like he was ready to kill.
"My name is Fury. I'm here to explain your situation to you." His voice was as tough sounding as his physical appearance.
"My situation? You mean how you and the other man with the weird eyes kidnapped me? What the hell do you want from me?" I asked sharply letting fearful tears fall from my eyes.
"No, my dear Willow, we did not kidnap you. We saved you." He stated simply.
"What?"
"What's the last thing you remember?" He asked leaning against the wall as he watched me.
"I was walking home from volunteering at the hospital. It was late and I was trying to hurry when a man with beady, dead eyes stopped me. He started asking me about a friend of mine who had joined the army. Then someone knocked me out from behind. That's all I remember." I explained.
Fury looked like he was thinking over everything I had just said.
"Miss Roffee, what was the date that that happened to you?" He asked narrowing his eyes at me.
"The 8th of May, 1946" I stated simply.
What is this guy trying to play?
"I'm sorry to inform you Miss Roffe but today is October 30th, 2013." He looked completely serious.
"What? You're joking. That's a ridiculous and cruel joke." I choked on a terrified sob.
"I assumed you wouldn't believe me but maybe a familiar face can help you."
The door to the room opened revealing a tall, muscular, and very attractive man. He looked familiar but like a stranger at the same time.
"I can't believe it's really you. Willie." His voice seemed to crack like he was overcome with emotion.
"Willie? No one calls me that but-"
"Stevie and Jamie?" He finished my sentence as he raised a brow at me.
I stood up in complete shock that this stranger knew that about me. Well partially, I wasn't sure who Jamie was. I stepped forward needing a closer look. His eyes peered down at me with pure happiness swirling in them. It was those eyes that told me who he was.
"Stevie?" I questioned in awe.
"Yea" he nodded.
Without another thought about the other name he mentioned I jumped into his arms. I'd never been so happy to see my friend. I heard he was dead! He nose dived into the ocean!
"You died! What the hell happened?" I questioned stepping back from him.
"There's plenty of time for that later. Right now we need to get you adjusted. What Fury said is the truth Willow. It's 2013. I've had about 2 years to adjust. I'll help you the best I can. Come with me."
Steve reached his hand out to me. I grabbed hold of him. I held on tightly hoping and praying this wasn't some joke or some kind of weird dream experience. I somehow got one of my friends back.
He pulled me out of the room into a larger open area. People were moving around all over the place. Women and men and different colors of skin all talking and working together. The unknown sounds rang out over the voices as I tried to take in all the action. There were desks everywhere with these odd looking machines on them. What is this place?
"Just trust me okay. Don't freak out like I did. Everything is going to be okay." Steve said as he patted my arm.
I nodded trying to keep myself calm. It's like I woke up in a whole new world. If it truly is 2013 then I practically am in a new world.
We continued to walk until we came to another door. Steve stopped and looked down at me. He squeezed my hand and smiled. He opened the door that led outside to the street. The loud sounds instantly rushed me. We stepped outside and I knew in that moment that this wasn't a lie. This certainly wasn't a dream either because there's no way I could dream something like this up. The cars zoomed by. People were everywhere. I had never seen anything like this. The vehicles, the buildings, the people, the clothing, the sounds, the bright shining signs. It was all too much to take in.
"Walk with me" Steve said gently pulling my hand.
"What is this place?" I asked keeping myself close to him.
"It's New York. Not exactly what it was when we were kids though." He smiled down at me.
That was an understatement. This was nothing like the New York I remembered.
"You see that tower up ahead? The one that says Avengers." He asked pointing at one of the extremely tall buildings.
I nodded seeing the one he pointed out.
"That's where we are going. I have friends there that will help you. They are good people."
