"niki look," you grinned as you leaned over the edge of the cliff, holding on to the tree next to you with one hand and pointing at the setting sun with the other. "what is it?" she called from a few trees behind you. you heard rustling as she stepped over a bush.
"you have to see for yourself," you replied, leaning back and deciding on waiting for her for a moment.
soon she emerged from the thick forest to the ledge youd found. she looked around confusedly for a second before spotting at the base of the tree, your hair blowing around you as leaned against the base of the large dark oak. she smiled to herself as she walked to you.
"race to the top of the tree?" you asked, lips quirked up smugly before hopping onto the nearest branch.
"wait but youre so much faster than me!" she said before hopping after you.
as she predicted, you reached the top branch before her, standing up and walking to the end of the thick branch. you sat, dangling your legs over the edge as you looked out over the sunset. you glanced down at her, to see her moving gracefully from branch to branch, the leaves almost dancing around her every move. for a teenager, she was surprisingly elegant.
you looked up at her face when you felt her presence beside you. she stood, her eyes glinting in wonder as she gazed over the multicolored fields of flowers that rolled into the distance, gently transitioning to the golden and soft pink of the sky as the sun set on the horizon.
"y/n," she breathed, the wind blowing her shoulder-length baby pink hair gently around her head as she looked, "its beautiful."
you grinned, a heat creeping across your cheeks as you watched her blue eyes glimmer with the reflection of the sun and moving clouds.
you reached up and pulled lightly on the cuff of her long sleeve shirt. she looked down at you with wide eyes and you patted the bark of branch next to you. she complied, sitting down next to you with her legs over the edge. you leaned back, putting your weight on your arms as you looked over the horizon.
niki mimicked you, sitting closer as she did so to be able to rest her head on your shoulder. you smiled a little and rested your head on hers.
"niki?" she hummed in response. you brought up your hand opposite of her, pinkie finger extended. "pinkie promise that no matter what happens, itll always be us."
"us?" she questioned, not lifting her head.
"we'll always be together- me and you against the world."
you felt her giggle a little as she rose her hand to interlock your pinkies.
"i promise."

you heard a light knock on your front door in a small pattern- a familiar knock that youve heard all your life.
"you know you can just come in!" you called, loud enough to be heard from the other side of the door, glancing up from the book you were reading.
