Elementary
This was stupid. All of this was stupid. The teachers were stupid. The kids are stupid. His father was stupid. The day is stupid. Everything was stupid.
Dom knew he wasn't going to enjoy this the second time in school, he never did. Mother's Day is stupid to him. Why do something if you don't have a mother? Huh? Haven't they thought of that? No.. they never do, because he's just a kid. A dumb kid. Just like what his father tells him.
But now he's smarter, being nine years old in fourth grade. He knows now that making something for a dead person will be pointless, well... that's what he thinks. So he said it to Okami.
Okami frowned at Dom's comment, not knowing the situation fully but looked down at him. "Well you can't skip the activity fully, it's part of your grade."
"That's stupid." Dom said, crossing his arms in protest. Okami frowned softly, always having trouble to settle Dom in class without him making a scene.
"Well..." Okami felt stumped on not having anything else for Dom to do as the other kids were making their cards for their mother's, or possibly eating glue. But once she glanced over, she smiled and turned back at Dom. "How about being a helper for someone?"
Being a helper?... That interested Dom, but he still kept his ticked off face and arms crossed as he followed Okami to a student's desk. He peeked over and frowned. Oh.. this one...
"Sam I have wonderful news! Dom here will help you cut shapes for your card!" Okami said gleefully, getting a separated seat for Dom and placed it in front of Sam's direction. Dom huffed, he didn't want to work with this rabbit.
"Oh.. okay." Sam said, slurring his words slightly from something in his mouth. Him and Dom never knew each other as much, but Sam knew Dom didn't like him for some reason.. probably because of his outward eyes and big hoodie that made him look smaller.
Yeah.. that's most likely it.. Sam does agree his eyes look weird from the others.
Dom didn't have time to protest once again as Okami left them both to help a student with the glue. He groaned in his head and had no choice but to take his seat. He looked at Sam's desk, "Geez your messy.."
Sam didn't speak, being too shy to do so and knowing that Dom didn't like him too much for being 'soft'.. yet he didn't do anything to Dom which annoyed him slightly. He uncomfortably moved his tongue around his mouth and tried staying awake, equaling a choppy paper heart from his scissors work. Dom just watched, wishing he did the activity by himself now.
"I thought three-year-olds cut like this." Dom commented, "Like what's up with the pieces all over the place?"
"It's really hard.." Sam finally said, "I don't think I have good scissors." He meant the last sentence to be for himself but Dom was getting frustrated and heard the last part before stealing the scissors and choppy work from Sam.
"Ugh! See! These work perfectly fine!" Dom scowled, working the scissors around the heart to shape it finer. "The problem is you and your slow hands!"
Sam didn't know what to say, not feeling the mood in feeling bad about himself or saying sorry to Dom for nothing, so he adjusted his hoodie while his ears went back. Dom continued cutting to prove him more.
The heart was quickly finished, not the best but way better than Sam's progress, as Dom puts it. He placed it in Sam's finished pile and started to cut more pieces, not because he wanted to help Sam, but because Okami was glancing over at them and he didn't want to get moved to another boring person. He grumbled at the thought and looked over at Sam's pile, "Are you this lazy?"
Sam didn't expect Dom to ask him any more questions so he hit a stump, "Uh.. not really?" Wait no that sounds confusing, "The medi'cine makes me drowsy." Uh.. too much information, "It's.. hard to do things right now." ... Great job.
".. Hm." Dom felt off about Sam's response, especially when Sam looked like he was talking to himself. But now he was getting curious again. "What's up with the mouth thing?"
"Um.. cotton balls."
"Cotton balls? Why do you like eating cotton?"
Sam shook his head from the wrong idea, "No.. is for my midi'cine."
"Is that why you were late?" Dom said, meaning when Sam was coming to school later than usual, since people who go to the nurse will be late for class. He watched Sam nod and fix his hoodie once more, the pieces being almost done.
"Now what's up with the hoodie?" Dom asked again, pushing Sam's buttons but Sam luckily didn't stump this time.
"I have like this.. big cut on my back and my aunt gave me this to feel more comfortable with the bandages." Sam explains, hoping that telling the truth will stop Dom from nagging him, but Dom continued.
"How did you get the cut? Got pushed off the swing?" he taunted.
"No.. car crash." Sam said, truthfully.
Dom cringed to himself immediately, and a lot. The guilt started to settle in his stomach, along with some regret on pushing Sam further. Stupid, stupid him.
Well now it makes obvious since on why Sam was like this, the medicine and bandages are making him tired as hell. Dom wondered why they even let him be in class, irresponsible adults..
He glanced at Sam and then back at the papers before sucking in some breath, "Hey uh Sam.. how about you take some rest? I'll.. I'll finish the card for you." he said to Sam, acting like he didn't get Sam's whole backstory. Sam liked that better and thanked him before resting his head on his folded arms. His eyes were already shutting down before Dom asked one last question.
"Why are you making a card if you have no mother?"
"Hm.. it might make Mom happy for a gift.." Sam mumbled.
Dom just looked at him, not questioning him further as Sam fell asleep before he even tried. He got the glue and started sticking everything together on the card, trying to make it good.
Maybe.. maybe he should make a card for his mother soon.
