Now a runner

Your POV

"Y/N! Y/N! Wait up!"

I turn my head around to see Minho. Me and him have been getting really close, since I have been helping him a lot recently. He is like a brother to me. 

"Y/N, I have great news!" He says, panting

"I would love to hear it, but maybe you should calm down a bit, Min" I laugh

He takes a few deep breaths before talking again. 

"I just talked to Alby. He said you can be a runner with me!"

"Realy?!"

"Yeah!"

I start to scream and jump from happiness, Minho does the same. We look like a couple of schoolgirls. But then it hit me. Newt. Newt, my perfect boyfriend. He won't like this and even if he did he would be worried sick everyday. I stop jumping and stare into Minhos eyes. 

"What?" He asks, while a frown forms on his face. 

"Newt" My voice was barely a whisper. "What do I tell him?"

"Y/N, this is a great opportunity. Newt will understand that."

"I don't know, Min. It's going to break his heart."

"Just talk to him. He loves you so much, he just wants you to be happy. And being a runner makes you happy, right?"

"Yeah, but don't you think that that would be selfish. I have to think about his feelings too."

"He'll be fine, Y/N. He is a big boy, he can handle it."

"Okay. I'll talk to him."

A sudden wave of nervousness overwhelmes me. How do I tell him this? He is going to be so scared and I can't bare to see him like that. But I really, really want to be a runner. It has been my dream since I arrived in that shucking box. I take a deep breath and walk to Newt, who is talking to a couple of the builders.

"Hey, Newt" 

"Hey, love. Are you alright?" 

I play with my fingers and look at the ground. Just act normal. I look back up and meet his beautiful brown eyes. 

"I'm fine. Can I talk to you? Alone?"

"Yeah, ofcourse"

He excuses himself to the builders and walks towards me. Newt takes my hand and we make our way to the deadheads. 

"What do you wanne talk about?"

"I have some big news"

I feel guilty. He looks so happy right now. Am I going to ruin that?

"Minho asked me if I wanted to be a runner." I start

I see his face drop and now concern is written all over it. No going back now. 

"Did you say no?"

"I said yes" I take a breath that I didn't know I have been holding in. 

"Why did you say yes?! It's to dangerous!"

I flinch. Newt never raises his voice. I have to stay strong now. If I really want this, I have to fight for it. 

"So?" I ask calmly

"So it's dangerous and I'm not letting you do this! I'm telling Alby now, your not going to be a runner!"

"No!!" I grab his wrist when he turns around. 

"It's not safe you could die!"

"It's not your choice to make!"

Now I'm the one yelling. I can't believe him! He is the one being selfish. He can't just take this from me! It is quiet for a moment. We are both panting from anger. After a while I decide to say something. 

"Maybe we should break up" I say quietly

"Maybe we should" He doesn't even look in my eyes. 

I turn around, tears start to blur my vision. I can't believe I did this. How can I survive here without Newt? I start to run, I don't know where, just away from this place. I can feel the tears sliding from my cheeks. I keep running and don't stop. Untill I run into someone. I look up and see Minho, he holds me by my shoulders

"Woah, woah, are you okay? What happened?" He sounds concerned. 

"Me and Newt broke up"  I start to cry even harder when the words leave my mouth. 

"You're going to be okay" He wraps his arms around me, while I wet his shirt with my tears. 

~ time skip ~

Me and Minho make our way to Fry for dinner. The air is filled with the smell of his famous stew. It makes me smile. It gives me comfort to know that nothing else has changed. We go to stand in line. 

"Are you alrigh?" Minho asks again

"Yeah, I'll be alright."

"I'm sure you will. You're a strong one aren't you" He laughs

I look behind him and my eyes meet Newts. His eyes are red, like he's been crying. It drives a stake to my heart. It hurts me to see him this way. He looks away from me and walks to the homestead and slams the door shut behind him. 

Minho POV

I was talking to Y/N, when I notice that she isn't looking at me anymore. Her gaze goes right past me. I turn around and see Newt walking to the homestead, he slams the door shut behind him. I feel bad for both of them. I thought those two shanks would be together forever. I won't let this happen. Newt and Y/N gave the glade hope for happiness and I'm not going to take that away from them. I excuse myself with Y/N and walk to the homestead. Newt is sitting on a chair in the corner. He looks in deep thought. A tear sparkles in the little light that shines through the window, but his eyes look normal. 

"Newt?" I ask carefully, no answer. 

"Newt!"

He jerks his head up.

"Dinner already started" He says

"I know. Are you alright?"

"Well, I'm sure Y/N already told you."

"Yeah, you should talk to her."

"Why should I? She clearly doesn't care about me if she is willing to go into that bloody maze!" Newt stands up, his eyes are filled with anger. 

"Newt, that girl shucking loves you. You know being a runner has been her dream. I thought you wanted her to be happy?"

"I do! I want her to be happy! Not death!"

"I'm going to be with her all the time. I'm not going to let anythig happen to her."

He doesn't say anything, he just stares at me, panting. 

"Newt, please, listen to me. I know you're scared, but think about her for a second. She is strong and amazingly fast. She would be just fine. Nothing will happen to her, I'll make sure of it. I promise." 

"You promise" He asks, his voice is shaking

"I promise. Now go get your girl back." 

And with those words Newt runs out of the homestead. 

Your POV 

I'm sitting alone on a log, waiting for Minho to come back, when I see someone running into my direction. I recognise Newts limp. He stops right in front of me, panting. 

"What are you-"

But I get cut of when he presses his lips onto mine. I feel his hands on my cheeks and I wrap my hands around his neck, pulling him closer. Then he pulls away. 

"I'm sorry" He says still out of breath.

"I know how much being a runner means to you and I just want you to be happy. Promise me you will be safe, I love you so so so much. Please, take me back?"

"Always" I say and kiss him again. I feel him smile against my lips, while he wraps his arms around my waist.
