Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Cansas Walker hated when her mom and Bobby Singer--her mom's friend--talked about her like she was some kind of monster. Like she would hurt someone.

Cansas would never hurt someone...not unless they deserved it and that woman with those black eyes and rotting face had been trying to take her away. Mom always told her never to let anyone take her to a different location--to do what that woman was trying to do.

The black-eyed, potty-mouthed woman had deserved to be turned into a cockroach and stomped into nothing. But when Mom had found out, she'd freaked and had driven Cansas to Bobby's old house full of too many boring books and stale food.

She scooped another mandarin orange from the singular fruit cup Bobby'd had into her mouth as their voices grew quiet, whispering about something they didn't want her to hear. Not that she could hear much from the room they'd shoved her in upstairs. Cansas only caught bits and pieces of their conversation. Things like, "--think she's a monster," and, "--she'll kill someone else if we don't find it".

They'd been trying to find this something forever. Something that would take Cansas' magic away. And Cansas knew she couldn't have her magic--knew it was dangerous and knew more of those black-eyed people would try to take her away, but she liked her magic. It made her feel like one of those girls from the movies! Like Carrie...though Carrie did end up being the bad guy.

Regardless, Cansas liked her powers.

"This place is super boring." The smell of honey and everything sweet filled her nose and Cansas whipped around to find a boy about her own age standing there, looking over the dust-covered room. His two, huge golden-brown wings ruffled in disgust.

"You're telling me. He doesn't even have ice cream. Who doesn't have ice cream?" Cansas exasperatedly asked. She leaned her head back against the chipping wall she sat on as he turned his butterscotch eyes onto her, a mischievous smirk on his lips.

"I say we get out of here." Cansas' mom's voice floated up through the floorboards.

"Bobby, I can't lose her. Not after--" And then it faded out of earshot. Her stomach did a turn and she shook her head.

"I shouldn't."

"But we can get ice cream." He singsonged, moving closer to Cansas.

She messed with her spoon. Cansas wanted nothing more than to leave this old house and get ice cream with her Angel, but she knew she couldn't.

"I can't. My mom will have a heart attack if I leave." He gave a dramatic groan, his wings giving a flap that sent a small gust of stale air her way.

"Party pooper." He huffed, sitting down next to Cansas on the floor by the door. Her mom's voice rose again, but she couldn't make out what was being said. "Isabelle sounds upset."

"I almost got kidnapped again by one of the black eye people." Angel's joky mood shifted and he got concerned. He didn't like the black-eyed people, not that she liked them any better, but he hated them more than Cansas ever did.

"What? Why didn't you call me?"

"Because I freaked out! I didn't think to pray for you!"

"Candy Cane--"

"My magic saved me. It turned her into a cockroach." Angel fell quiet for a moment, thinking.

"That's what your mom's talking about with Bobby, isn't it?" Cansas nodded.

"They want to take my magic away." Angel nodded and leaned back against the wall we sat on. He knew about this alrighty. "Do--do I let them?" Cansas had asked him this before and he'd never given her an answer. But she needed an answer, especially now. Now when it seemed set in stone it was going to happen. He turned his butterscotch eyes onto her, giving a shrug.
