THANK YOU FOR THE 100+ READS! YOU ARE ALL AWESOME!

The sound of the bang echoed throughout the forest. It made Kaito and Maki freeze completely, neglecting what they were saying, doing and thinking. The forest became deathly still for a few seconds before another bang resounded through the air. Kaito felt something small and fast whizz right past his head. Maki sensed it too. They looked around frantically, the hairs on the back of their necks standing on end. That's when they spotted them. Two men, dressed casually. They held a gun each in their hands. Both aiming at them. Kaito knew that the bus wasn't full, only a few people including him and Maki boarded. But he recognised the jacket on one of the men. It was army green and almost looked like a hunter's jacket. That man was on the bus, as well as his companion. There can only be one reason as to why they were chasing the students.

The men were Vampire Hunters!

Kaito didn't know what happened. He wanted to run. He wanted to protect Maki. So why his body not moving?! Memories ran through his head. He was a kid, human police officers were at the door asking for his grandparents and eavesdropping on the heartbreaking conversation.

"Kaito! Run!"

Kaito snapped out of it when Maki grabbed his wrist. He was taken aback when Maki started to drag him as if he weighed next to nothing. He heard the men shouting behind him as the gunshots continued to ring through the air. Kaito felt one once again whizz by his head, almost grazing his ear. He felt like he would've fainted if Maki didn't keep yanking him. She was the only thing that kept him awake and moving right now. He struggled to keep up as he stumbled along. Why was he acting like that?! He wants to protect Maki, but it was like his own fear was causing him to slow down. It was almost like it wanted him to accept this kind of horrific death.

"Hurry up, idiot! I can't drag you forever!" Maki shouted, her voice sounding strained. Kaito snapped out of his inner turmoil. He needed to snap out of it and protect Maki. He had this sudden drive to do that. He felt it before. Back when he was rescuing Maki from the vampires that kidnapped her. He felt glad to feel that drive again. He gripped her hand tighter than ever. His pace picked up, outrunning her. He dragged Maki behind him. He was so fast that Maki was almost flying over the ground. The bullets kept zipping past them as the shouts increased in volume. These two must be complete amateurs if they were this terrible at aiming. And to seemingly be on their own. The distance between them grew but it won't be enough if a bullet eventually hits either teenager. Kaito changed directions as quickly as he could. He almost went towards his grandparents just out of routine. But he only went deeper into the forest, far away from his grandparents so they won't get killed. Kaito couldn't help but feel immense pressure to keep his loved ones safe. Why can't he just deal with one thing at a damn time?!

"Kaito! That fallen tree! Duck down behind it now!" Maki suddenly ordered, gesturing ahead of Kaito. He saw it. A large fallen tree that must have come down a while ago. It was covered almost completely in moss and seemed to be rotting the inside out. The trunk was wide enough for both students duck behind and shelter from the bullets that continued to fly. Kaito leaped up over it, dragging Maki up with him. They ducked behind it, hiding completely. The only problem was that the problem is that the Vampire Hunters knew where they were. No doubt they'll go around the log to finally kill the students.

"Okay. What-" Kaito started to ask, but he was cut short when gunshots suddenly sounded like they were next to him. He sharply looked up, fearing the worst. He was quite shaken at the thought of the worst case scenario. He still felt like he was going to have a heart attack when he noticed Maki leaning a little over the log. With a small gun in her hands. Her bag laid open next to her. She had it concealed on her since they left the school. She shot incredibly fast. There was the sound of two bodies hitting the forest floor. Kaito looked up, and felt an odd feeling of relief as he saw the dead Vampire Hunters. With a heavy breath, both vampire and assassin sat back against the log. Both were exhausted, but at the same time relieved. Relieved that this danger was gone almost as swiftly as it came. That was too close.

Short chapter. Sorry if it wasn't great, but I hope that you guys still enjoy it. Hopefully the next chapter will be better.
