The day had finally come.
The Hunter's Moon had finally arrived. Under normal circumstances, Kaito would be fine. However, right now, he wished that the dreaded moon never existed. All day, he kept repeating the plan to Maki. He would be locked up down in the basement, with some blood to help him through the night, while Maki was to hide herself away in the Kaito's room. She had offered to sleep in the guest room, but Kaito convinced her that she would have more things to barricade the door with in his room. While the door had a lock on it, it would be best to barricade the door just in case. Kaito kept drilling into Maki's head that she was to not open the door under any circumstances. Much to Maki's relief, his room had a small bathroom attached, so she wouldn't need to worry about needing to get out of the room. It also gives her one last place to try to hide if Kaito tried to break in to get her.
The sun had set, turning the sky dark. As soon as the sun was gone, Kaito and Kenzo went down to the basement while Yuuta and Maki made last minute preparations. Maki even grabbed made sure that she had her knife with her. She kept it hidden, not wanting to scare the elders. She didn't want to hurt Kaito, but it was a last resort. One that she prayed would never come.
"I don't think that I need to remind you, dear, but be sure to keep this room locked up tight and barricaded." Yuuta reminded Maki, dropping off enough food and water to last Maki through the night. Maki nodded absentmindly as she drew the curtains closed. "If Kaito breaks free, my husband and I will do everything we can to stop him from getting to you."
"Thank you, Mrs Momota." Maki said. She looked concerned as Yuuta looked depressed. She cautiously approached the elder, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Are you alright?"
"Just breaks my heart knowing that Kaito is okay with this." Yuuta sighed as she seemed to sag a little. She looked like she was about to start panicking. "I mean, locking him in the basement is bad enough, but..."
"Mrs Momota, please calm down." Maki gently spoke up, looking at Yuuta in the eye. "I don't like this either, but this is Kaito's decision. We have no choice, but to accept it." Yuuta took a deep breath as she nodded slightly. She tried to remain steady as she held both of Maki's hands in her own
"Kaito's lucky to have you I think dear." She smiled before giving the girl a quick hug. Maki welcomed it before they pulled apart. "I'll be going now, but try to get some sleep, Maki." Maki only nodded wearily. Once Yuuta left, she closed the door and locked it. She took a deep breath, calming the nerves that suddenly made themselves known. This night isn't going to be easy.
———————————————————————————
In the basement, things were just as bleak. If not, even more. Having Kaito just locked and roaming around in the basement was still too high of a risk. There was still a chance that he could break out and attack Maki. So, that day when he and Kenzo went to the town to get some supplies, it was to make sure that he would be down in the basement for good. The air felt incredibly tense as the sound of chains filled the room. Kaito did his best to relax as the cold metal was wrapped around his wrists and ankles. He didn't dare tense up in fear of the chains being loose.
"Kaito, are you sure you're okay with this?" Kenzo asked, working hard to secure one of the chains to the wall. Kaito couldn't blame the elder for asking that question for what felt like the 100th time. He didn't like this idea as much as his grandparents, but this was the best solution until a better one came to them.
"I wouldn't have suggested this if I wasn't, Gramps." Kaito said, trying his best to be confident with this choice. It took everything he had to not say that he changed his mind.
"That's as tight as I can make these." Kenzo muttered, stepping away. Kaito looked at the restraints on him before tugging at his wrists. The chains rattled and strained against him. They held steadfast, unable to break away. He used all the strength he could muster, but he was still held back.
"It'll have to do." Kaito muttered, trying not to think of what could happen when it was midnight. He can't think of the worst case scenario. He needs to focus on staying calm and try to think of other things. There was a creaking of someone walking down the stairs of the basement. Yuuta slowly approached her grandson. Her face was full of hurt as she tried to keep herself from crying. Kaito couldn't blame her. He could see that his grandfather was doing everything that he could to keep it together.
"Maki's locked herself in the bedroom. I heard her move some furniture in there, so I think that she's barricading herself in there as well." Yuuta breathed as she steadied herself.
"Good. That's good. That's all I need to hear." Kaito sighed in relief. Despite all this bleakness, he was glad to get some good news. He knows that Maki can take care of herself extremely well, what with her being an assassin after all. But not even she could stop Kaito from harming her. This is why he wanted to make extra measures to make sure that she was safe.
"I brought down some rabbit's blood as well. Something to help you through the night." Yuuta sighed, placing a canteen close enough for Kaito to grab it. Despite it being closed, Kaito could faintly smell the blood's scent. Judging by the size of the canteen, it should be more than enough to keep him satisfied during the night.
"Thank you." Kaito smiled a little, before he looked seriously at his family. "You two better go. I don't want to hurt either of you down here." Not what the elders wanted to hear. They hoped that he would want one of them to stay with him, but, for Kaito, it was too much to risk. He didn't want to hurt either of them because there was a chance of him displaying dangerously, unpredictable actions.
"If anything happens, please shout for us." Kenzo said, patting Kaito's shoulder gently.
"I can't promise that." Kaito sighed, unable to look at his grandparents in the eyes. "Now, please, just get outta here." Hesitantly, the elders left, their footsteps slow, as if they hoped for Kaito to change his mind. He didn't say anything else. The door was closed, a loud clicking sound resonated afterwards as the door locked. Kaito once again tried to relax as he was left alone in the basement. Through the small window, moonbeams pierced in, only providing a small amount of light. Aside from the faint speech from his grandparents, Kaito couldn't hear anything else. This made him feel more and truly alone. Glancing down at his watch, he was cruelly reminded that there was still a ways to go until midnight finally came. The night had started, but he desperately wished that time would go faster. He wants the dreaded nightmare to be over already. Once it was over, things can go back to normal. That's all that he truly wanted.
This is going to be a long night.
