I stood outside the church doors with my father standing right next to me. We were locked in arms, he was wiping away tears from his eyes with his free hand."Daddy I'm so nervous" I whispered. The doors were about to open and we were gonna walk down that aisle.
I was about to be a married woman, my life was about to change.
"Are you sure you wanna do this?" He asked.
In all seriousness, I was more than sure. I knew I wanted to marry Adam- he was my everything. Ever since he came into my life some four years ago, I was the happiest I'd ever been.
Years after years of disappointment in my relationships made me nearly give up on love. I remember I almost cancelled Adam and I's first date- so glad I didn't.
"Yes dad, I'm sure. It's just butterflies. I just have butterflies"
We heard "Hear comes the bride" begin to play and I nearly fainted.
Those butterflies in my stomach began to fly around at a quicker pace. I was so scared.
The doors opened finally.
I was met with hundreds of pairs of eyes staring at me. Some people cried, others smiled.
My dad and I started to slowly walk down the aisle. I didn't know then, but I had a huge smile plastered on my face.
I couldn't take my eyes off Adam. There were a bunch of people watching me but he was the only one I cared about. My mom sat at the front row and stood once my dad and I got to the end of the aisle.
"Who gives this woman?" The pastor asked
"Her mom and I" My dad answered. He was no longer crying. His once watery eyes gave off such joy.
Adam and my dad helped me to get up upon the step. I could hear the sniffles coming from my future husband
"Hi" I chimed
"Hey" My groom exclaimed.
The ceremony went on, and soon we began to say our vows.
"Adam, I still remember the day we met. It was a cold wintery day, and I had ran out the house that morning without a jacket. I was a junior in college while you were a senior- and it was nearing finals. I had just left the library after hours of studying, and like I said, I had no jacket. I remember it began to snow and I rushed to my car only to realize I lost my keys. I looked in my purse, my school bag, and even in the library to no avail. I was screwed. I was outside mad and cold. Then, you came along out of thin air with my keys in your hand. Turns out they fell underneath a bookshelf in the library somehow. I was freaked out because some random man just showed up with my keys, so I was like 'how did you know the keys were mine'"
Everyone laughed while I continued, "But then you pointed out that I was in that library freaking out because I lost my car keys. You saw me panicking that day and searched high and low just to help me. I said thanks and you said any time-and you meant it. Ever since then, you've done everything in your power to help me out whenever I had a problem. It was you that helped me to graduate. And aside from being helpful, you were so sweet, kind, caring, persistent, and not to mention handsome. It was sunny outside when you asked me out for the first time, and I swear the sun began to shine a little brighter. What I'm trying to say is, you're everything I could have ever asked for. And I'm so excited to finally be able to call myself your wife" I finished with happy tears streaming from my eyes.
A collective "awwwww" came from the audience. Now it was Adam's turn.
"Babe, ever since I saw you running through that library in a freak panic- I knew I needed to get to know you. Everything about you is so attractive, but it was your personality that really made me fall so deep in love. You are truly the definition of perfect in my eyes. I couldn't imagine my life without you in it. Everyday I spend with you is a great day. I remember, just last year, we were laying on the couch and you asked me why I made it my business to find your keys that infamous winter day. I couldn't quite give you an answer, because I really didn't know. I never really thought about it, but now I think I know why. I did it because from the moment I saw you, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you. You're the best thing to ever happen to me. I can't wait to see what comes from rest of our lives together"
I almost gave him a big kiss right then, but I held my composure.
I paid little to no attention to the pastor, only zoning in when I heard; "Ebony, do you take Adam to be your lawfully wedded husband? To have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?"
"I do" I said quickly
"Adam, do you take Ebony to be your lawfully wedded wife? To have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?"
"I do"
"Well by the power invested in me by the state of Georgia, I now pronounce you man and wife. You may now kiss the bride"
Cheers filled the room as we kissed. I was so happy.
My husband and I two-stepped down that aisle with smiles on our face.
I still felt those butterflies, but they weren't nervous ones.
No, those ones came from the purest form of happiness.
