Luke's P.O.V.
Caleb's lips spread into a toothless smile. He doesn't answer me.
"Luke," Dahlia whispers next to me, her hand wavering against my skin. Sometimes it can touch me, sometimes it passes through me. "Luke, who is that?"
"We know it's your jolts that's hurting us, Caleb," Alex states, answering Dahlia's question.
"Look, we're not joking your stupid club," Reggie spits.
"Yes, yes," Caleb waves his hand. I can feel Dahlia tense up next to me. I have to admit, when I first saw Caleb he was intimidating. Not bevause I was scared, but because he seems so magical. "Tonight is a big night for you three. You're playing The Orpheum. What a dream."
None of us reply.
"Oh," Caleb taps a black painted nail against his chin. "I'm missing something. Thats right. You're crossing over tonight."
Dahlia tugs on my arm. I look down at her. Her eyes are filled with fear.
"Who's this?" Caleb asks suddenly. I quickly push Dahlia farther behind me. Caleb smirks. He knows, by my reaction, that she's my weakness, my Achille's heel.
He waves his fingers at me. Dahlia passes straight through me and slides against the floor toward Caleb.
"No!" I shout, reaching out for her. Alex and Reggie attempt to grab her, but they phase through her.
"Luke! Alex! Reggie!" Dahlia shouts. She is cut off when Caleb snaps his fingers. Her voice cuts off, her lips still moving. She wraps her hands around her throat, panicked. I can see her eyes filling with tears.
"Well, well, well," Caleb hops off the piano and walks in a circle around her. He grabs her chin and tilts her face toward him. "Aren't you a pretty thing."
"Get your hands off her," I growl, rushing toward him. He rolls his eyes and throws his arm up. I run into an invisible wall, along with Alex. Reggie approaches it and slams his fist against it.
"So," Caleb takes his hand off of Dahlia. "This -lifer- is yours then?"
"Keep her out of this, Caleb," Alex warns.
"She seems awfully valuable," Caleb furrows his brows. "Thats such a shame, she's mortal." He shivers as he says the word.
"Leave her alone," I shout, throwing my fists against the invisible wall in front of me. I only end up wearing myself out, something I didn't know was possible, and fall to the ground on my knees. Dahlia sinks to her own, crawling toward the wall.
"She is," Caleb speaks with a disgusted tone. "Important to you somehow."
Dahlia puts her hand up to the wall and says words I can't hear. I put my hand up to hers and start to cry with her.
"I'm so sorry, Darling," I say.
She says something I can't hear, shaking her head.
"If using her - and William of course - is the only way that I can get you three," Caleb waves his hand again, as if he is just talking to air. "Then, I'll take her."
"No!" Reggie and Alex both shout.
"Dahlia," I whisper, staring at her. "I'm so sorry."
Her sobs turn into a steady drop of tears. She looks at me, slowing her inaudible words until I can understand what she's saying.
I love you.
She nods slowly and looks up at Reggie and Alex.
"Very well," Caleb wipes off his suit. "I'll see you at the club boys."
I swing my arms at the wall again, Reggie and Alex joining me. Dahlia puts her head down before her and Caleb disappear.
"No!" I scream, finally breaking through the wall. "No. No. No." I wipe my hands over the spot on the floor where Dahlia was kneeling.
"He has Dahlia," Reggie says quietly.
"He has Willie," Alex adds.
I sit back on my heels, stating at the spot where she disappeared from.
"Luke?" I can hear Alex saying. "What are we gonna do?"
My mind races, spinning in circles, repeating every second of what just happened.
"Luke?" Reggie asks.
But I don't know what to do.
