Chapter 4: Explanations

I wake up in the same position as I was last night: leaning against a tree with my knees pulled up to my chest.

The sun was out again and it shone brightly on my skin, it was warm. I slowly start to stand up and walk around once more. 

I see Alby walking over to me again. Once he gets close enough to me he says "hey, greenie. Do you remember anything yet, maybe your name?" He smiles at me and I return one. I then say "yeah now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure my name is y/n." I said this with happiness because I finally remembered something. 

He then says "follow me, I have something to show you."  Without hesitation, I followed him out of the woods and away from the tree. He walked me over to a large tower. We both climb up it. We both stand at the top leaning against a railing in silence. 

I want answers so I ask "what are those doors for?" I say this while pointing at the large Disney gates a saw at the bonfire the night before.  He then responds saying "ok greenie, I'm going to tell you everything but I don't want you to freak out, so try to stay calm." He says this with overprotectiveness in his voice. Alby was acting like a father to me or an older brother. 

He then continues to speak saying "those doors close every night then they re-open again in the morning. Beyond those doors is a maze and no one is allowed to go in except the runners and the leaders. This is because it is dangerous out there, there are monsters called grievers. We all know they're out there but no one has ever lived to tell another what they look like." When he said the last sentence he sounded sad and sincere but it quickly faded away. 

He then continues talking, "the runners map out the maze and memorize it trying to find a way out.  The leaders protect and give orders around here. I am the first leader and Newt is the second leader. There are jobs to keep the peace and order in here, the runners and leaders are two of them. There are slicers, they kill animals to provide food for everyone. Another job is the builders, they help build stable shelters. The med-jacks help heals the wounded and sick. There are gardeners, they harvest food and plant them. Then there are keepers. The keepers are the miny leaders of each job." 

I smile at him and say "what job can I do?" I said this with a calm and unsure voice. He then says "well today you're going to be switching between jobs to see which one suits you best. He then says "come on, I have something else to show you." 

I followed him again and he took me to one of the walls, but this one had no vines in one spot. In the place of vines, there are names on the wall. Some names were bigger than others and some were crossed out. I was feeling curious so I asked "why are their names crossed out? What happened to them?" 

He looks at me seriously and responds saying "the dark days. Some people died from fear and anger over the creators. But you're different, for one you're a girl. But you're strong, brave, curious and you don't seem to be in a panic over this." He smiles at me and pats my shoulder.

He grabs my right arm and pulls it up and he then flattens my palm. He puts a knife in my hand as he says "you're one of us now, you need to know what that means." He points to the wall indicating for me to carve my name on it. I don't respond I just nod my head and walk closer to the wall. I place my left palm on the wall to support my other hand which has already started carving. 

Once I was done carving y/n, I turned around to notice Alby is still standing there. He then walks closer and I give him the knife back. He then says "the first job you're going to be trying is the med-jacks then you have gardens. After lunch, I'll tell you about the other jobs you can try to do."

I  then say "ok," with a smile on my face. I was excited but also nervous. I think to myself 'this place might not be so bad after all.' 

I then walk off and follow Alby. We reach a wooden hut which looks to be built a few days before I came here. Alby then says "this is the med-hut, the med-jacks are already inside." He then walks away and leaves you to do your job (in training).
